Job Title: Director of Teaching and Learning (Secondary)


Job Function:

Provide leadership for the district's curriculum and instructional program for grades 6-12, supporting student achievement and growth aligned with the district’s strategic plan.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent and other Academic Services Directors to implement Kentucky Academic Standards and district frameworks.
  • Ensure curriculum, instruction, and assessment alignment across grades 6-12.
  • Oversee the development and revision of secondary subject area programs and materials.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the secondary curriculum and recommend changes based on student achievement data.
  • Supervise and coach the Teaching and Learning department staff.
  • Work with school leadership to implement effective instructional strategies and academic supports.
  • Set and monitor high standards for student and staff performance.
  • Provide and develop professional learning opportunities aligned with district improvement plans.
  • Participate in district committees and professional learning activities.
  • Maintain up-to-date records and monitor the effectiveness of support provided.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Expertise in evidence-based and culturally relevant curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices.
  • Knowledge of academic programs like Advanced Placement, Dual Credit, and Career Technical Education.
  • Understanding of high school graduation plans and effective teaching strategies.
  • Experience in professional learning, master schedule planning, dropout prevention, and intervention.
  • Budget and personnel management skills.
  • Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to work as part of a high-performing team and manage multiple tasks.
  • Experience with literacy and numeracy strategies for diverse, urban school districts.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s and Master's Degree (required)
  • Rank I (preferred)
  • District-level or large-scale leadership experience (preferred)
  • Minimum of four years combined teaching and supervisory experience (preferred)
  • Proven success in raising student achievement at the secondary level
  • Strong team-building and coaching skills


Licenses and Requirements:

  • Kentucky Teaching Certification
  • Kentucky Administrative Certification
