Serving as a member of the Group Benefits Divisional Support Team, this role will be a dedicated resource for actuarial service across the division, with a strong focus on Amwins Accident & Health Underwriters.


The Group Benefits Division is one of five operating divisions within Amwins Group. It produces over $6.2B in annual premium placements, has over 9k retail agency relationships, over 900 employees and over 160 carrier relationships. Uniquely focused on providing compelling and comprehensive solutions to assist benefit brokers and consultants, we complement our clients’ existing capabilities by helping to expand their product and service offerings when resources and investments may be focused elsewhere. We accomplish the through 3 primary capabilities including: fully insured, self-funded and customized benefits programs.

Fully Insured: medical, retiree health, ancillary and association

Self-Funded: stop loss, alternative risk solutions, cost containment, PBM, and data analytics/reporting.

Customized Programs: underwriting, ancillary, cost containment, PBM, PEO.

Position Overview


Over the past several years, the Group Benefits Division (GB) has insourced key health actuarial initiatives. As the business continues to grow, so does the need for additional support in this area.


We are looking for someone who works well in a highly collaborative and analytical environment while also flourishing independently. Candidates should have a strong technical foundation and must have solid written and oral communication skills. This is a role for someone who is excited to find the trends behind data then tell a story and help build unique solutions.


Responsibilities


The Associate Health Actuary role will be based in Charlotte, NC and will partner with the current Group Benefits actuarial team. This role will have exposure to and interact with multiple operating companies across the division that specialize in a variety of different health care benefits and products. The Group Benefits division requires the successful application of varying actuarial techniques to solve specific business problems, to develop, validate, and maintain rating models, enhance efficiency and capabilities of existing models and processes, and ultimately to provide business recommendations. Those needs including the following areas of concentration:


Pricing/Underwriting

  • and development of manual rates.
  • and support development of new products and underwriting methodologies.
  • valuation and plan changes based on utilization and network assumptions.
  • care renewal analysis.
  • pricing and trend analyses.
  • projections.
  • modeling.
  • and maintain strong documentation on all modeling, process changes, and analyses performed.

Benchmarking

  • block of business experience data, to compare against carrier data, industry trends or studies.
  • impact of additional cost containment services and potentially performance guarantee determination.

Self-funded and Minimum Premium Arrangements

  • alternative funding arrangements.
  • premium equivalent rates.
  • medical claim trend rates and stop loss pricing trends.
  • reinsurance and stop loss coverage and interpret contracts.


Qualifications


  • degree in a related field (actuarial science, mathematics, data science, or another major with quantitative course work).
  • or near ASA with not less than 5 years of health actuarial experience.
  • in data mining, statistical analysis, and data transformation/manipulation.
  • in database software such as SQL and/or Python. Proficiency/Expertise in Power BI or Tableau is a plus.
  • use of Microsoft Office products (especially Excel with VBA and PowerPoint).
  • math skills and the ability to solve and understand analytical problems and solutions.
  • prioritize workload and work within tight timeframes when required.
  • to work within a team environment but also able to organize an individual workload.
  • and experience with health benefits, medical underwriting, the insurance industry, risk initiatives, and Health Care Reform.
  • to quickly learn new software programs.
  • to tell a succinct, meaningful, and actionable story with data.
  • written and verbal communication skills.
  • be a team player and can work in a fast pace, exciting environment.
