Summary


The Attorney reports to the Corporate Legal Counsel. The Attorney is responsible for assisting the Corporate Legal Counsel in providing comprehensive legal advice and support across a broad range of corporate legal matters. Key responsibilities include:


  • Provide expert legal counsel and strategic guidance to the Board of Directors, Officers, and senior management on a variety of corporate legal issues.
  • Oversee corporate governance matters, including board meetings, minutes, and resolutions.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts for matters, including real estate leases, intellectual property, construction, non-disclosures, professional services, consultants, technology, gaming devices, entertainment, asset and equity purchases, settlements, employment, subsidiary operating agreements, intra-tribal/state arrangements, and other commercial agreements.
  • Advise on business development activities, including acquisitions, strategic partnerships, and entity formation.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting LDC and its subsidiaries.
  • Manage litigation and disputes, working closely with external counsel as needed.
  • Conduct legal research, draft legal memos, and stay current on applicable laws and regulations.
  • Draft policies and procedures to mitigate legal risks and promote compliance.
  • Collaborate with various departments to provide legal support and training.
  • Advise on employment and labor law matters.
  • Provide public and community relations services.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as necessary or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in good standing with the State of New Mexico Bar.
  • Not less than 15 years’ experience preferably with a combination of law firm and in-house experience in Indian law, Indian gaming, and corporate law.
  • Strong knowledge of Pueblo of Laguna law and Tribal-State of New Mexico Gaming Compacts.
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • High ethical standards and strong business acumen.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • High competency in reading, and comprehension of governmental and legal documents (e.g., ordinances, statutes, regulations, legislation, pleadings, policies, legal memoranda, treatises, etc.)
  • Superior speaking and writing skills and ability to express thoughts clearly.
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in legal research methodologies including library and electronic information sources.
  • Must be knowledgeable and skilled in proper usage of legal citations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.


Work Environment

  • The work environment is in an office setting (not a remote work position).
  • Office hours are primarily Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, with extended hours and occasional weekends based on client’s needs.


REQUIREMENT

  • Obtain and maintain a gaming license through the Pueblo of Laguna’s Gaming Control Board.
  • Must pass a pre-employment alcohol and drug test.
  • Must maintain, in good standing, a valid New Mexico drivers’ license.
