Team Role: The Mechanical Designer is responsible for the design and documentation of all mechanical systems related to code compliant building design including but not limited to: ventilation air, hydronic heating and cooling, filtration, domestic hot & cold water, storm drainage, sanitary drainage, and fire protection systems. They coordinate with other architecture, interiors, and engineering project team members to deliver well-coordinated, holistically sound building system documents.

The Mechanical Designer will work with the Engineering Studio Director to organize and deliver design packages for multiple projects simultaneously, on time, and in accordance with our client's expectations.

Project Responsibilities:

With the Engineering Studio Director, develop and maintain mechanical engineering documentation and template standards for CAD and Revit.

Perform on-site surveys and detailed building assessments of existing mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems (including current utility services) to define existing state of building operations and provide recommendations for upgrades and basic code compliance.

Complete mechanical systems design calculations including: duct & pipe sizing, airflow, heating and cooling design loads, static pressure, head loss, humidification load, domestic water peak demand, and other related calculations. Complete 2D and 3D construction documentation of building systems (ie. floor plans, flow diagrams, details, schedules) in Revit and AutoCAD, in which proficiency in both is required.

Perform equipment selections for major building equipment as related to the HVAC, plumbing, and fire suppression systems for both new/'ground-up' and existing buildings.

Perform psychometric analysis of air systems to ensure alignment with project "Basis of Design" documents and client needs.

Create control sequences of operations desired for mechanical equipment performance.

Coordinate with electrical and plumbing engineers to ensure MEP requirements are fully coordinated.

Coordinate with architects and interior designers to ensure proper HVAC requirements and specifications.

Conduct coordination sessions with MEP engineers, structural engineers, site/civil engineers, architects, and other project designers to ensure coordination between all system components. Attend meetings (internal and client) as needed to review project progress.

Confirm project code compliance with all national and local codes.

Provide sustainable design suggestions and calculations related to obtaining LEED certification where applicable.

Review RFI's and equipment submittals to ensure accuracy with engineering design documents.

Visit active construction sites to perform walkthroughs and develop punch-lists.

With the Engineering Studio Director, review available project budget & manage time effectively to stay within allotted fees.

Be an active and collaborative team member, including participation in activities and internal charrettes focused on maintaining and expanding the firm's production and quality control as well as engineering and design aptitude. Attend industry functions and events to grow individual knowledge-base and enhance the firm’s presence.
