Under the direction of the Survey Manager, the Survey Party Chief will lead and supervise survey crews on design, mapping, and construction projects. This role includes organizing and managing field crews to complete tasks accurately, efficiently, and within budget. The Survey Party Chief is responsible for calculating and recording field data, planning field methods, and reviewing job specifications.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Lead field survey crews in conducting boundary traverses, location surveys, level runs, and retracement surveys, and staking civil improvements for residential, commercial, and public works projects.
- Direct and coordinate crew activities to ensure accurate and timely survey work.
- Operate Trimble Total Stations and GPS equipment, perform field calculations, and document all survey phases with clear, well-written notes.
- Use computer survey programs, AutoCAD, and advanced field survey engineering methods, maintaining knowledge of survey/GPS instruments.
- Review construction plans and specifications to ensure accurate field implementation.
- Conduct research and prepare field packages, including required materials and documents, before fieldwork.
- Perform advanced mathematical calculations (algebra and trigonometry) as required.
- Maintain awareness of project budgets and manage time efficiently in the field.
- Drive and navigate survey vehicles safely across rough or uneven terrain.
- Make independent decisions on work methods and procedures, with recommendations on project organization and requirements.
- Apply sound judgment, initiative, and knowledge of company standards to ensure project success.
- Communicate effectively with contractors, clients, site personnel, the Survey Manager, and the survey team.
- Assist in staff selection, training, evaluation, and discipline, as needed.
- Demonstrate problem-solving, decision-making, communication, and team-building skills.
- Other responsibilities may be assigned as necessary to support project objectives.
Working Conditions:
- Perform fieldwork in various weather conditions with exposure to extreme elements and dust.
- Ability to work on rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma required; two years of college preferred.
- Minimum of four years’ experience as a Survey Party Chief.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Minimum auto liability limits are $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident for bodily injury and $50,000 for property damage or a $300,000 combined single limit.
