Position Summary
The Civil Engineer, who reports to a principal of the firm, participates in a diverse and dynamic portfolio of projects varying in size from residential development, commercial, and medical buildings, to solar array installations and large industrial complexes. Many of our projects involve innovative designs for environmentally sensitive areas.
Your Impact
Because there is no "typical" project at SME, the Civil Engineer has an exceptional opportunity to work on a wide variety of assignments for buildings, roadways, stormwater systems, solar power arrays, and water and sewerage systems.
As an SME Civil Engineer you will be responsible for:
- Project management, site planning, civil engineering and design
- Bid and construction services
- Permitting, document preparation, and public presentations
as well as:
- Maintaining a high level of organizational skills to keep tasks on schedule, and
- Being an integral team member and problem solver who is adept at developing practical, cost-effective solutions that serve our clients well.
Because the Civil Engineer works closely with SME's multidisciplinary staff and frequently interacts directly with clients, regulatory agencies, and the public, your strong interpersonal and communications skills (written and verbal) are important. At SME, we take pride in building and maintaining positive long-term relationships with all stakeholders.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- B.S. degree in Civil Engineering, with 5+ years of experience
- Professional Engineer's license preferred
- Solid civil engineering design experience, including site development, grading plans, stormwater analysis and design, roadway design, utility analysis and design, code research, drafting of technical reports and specifications
- AutoCAD and civil/site design, and HydroCAD software experience is necessary
- Experience with local, state, and federal permitting, and
- Effective oral and written communication skills are essential.

Compensation and Benefits
SME offers an excellent compensation and benefits package that includes:
- 100% company paid Medical, Life, and Long-term and Short-term Disability insurance
- Annual contributions to the enrolled employee's Health Savings Account (HSA)
- Paid vacation and sick time and 9 paid holidays per year
- Retirement plan comprising three components: a 401(k) plan with generous matching contribution; profit sharing; and a non-discretionary 3% of gross pay contribution. There are year-end bonuses for all employees.
- Performance-based year-end bonuses.
