Insomnia Cookies, a rapidly growing, internationally recognized, multi-unit retail bakery company is seeking a Director of Construction who will be responsible for overseeing the construction of new stores, store renovations and other projects in the United States and Canada. As part of the Store Development team, this position plays a vital role in company growth and sustainability. The Director of Construction will provide leadership and direction for all aspects of construction/renovation/other projects throughout the company. Though this role requires travel, the base operations will be out of our HQ in Center City Philadelphia.

Jon Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the planning and development process of new store construction and renovations.
  • Effectively lead the construction lifecycle and deliver on the Company’s annual NSO plan, implementing any process improvements along the way to achieve these goals.
  • Ensure on time delivery for new store openings that meet or beat store cost budgets.
  • Creatively lower the cost and speed of construction.
  • Coordinate pre-construction planning with design team and Construction Project Managers.
  • Create and effectively manage deadlines for all construction projects.
  • Effectively manage, lead and develop a team of Construction Project Managers.
  • Drive consistent improvement in team members through open communication, education, and strong organizational skills.
  • Prepare project status reports daily and weekly.
  • Complete budgets and estimates, plan review, cost analysis and value engineering.
  • Consistently prioritize tasks to meet/beat deadlines.
  • Work with executive leadership to develop long term plans for the organization around the growth and development of construction.
  • Effectively manage and maintain a network of architects, contractors, and vendors to ensure all projects have best-in-class support and that projects and programs are delivered in accordance with scope, schedule and budget.
  • Constant improvement of processes, systems and procedures.
  • Travel estimated at 30% of the time.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned or requested.


Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • 7 years of construction leadership/management experience preferably in the hospitality or multi-unit retail industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Construction Management, Project Management or equivalent and commensurate combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of processes and procedures for construction administration, including CPM scheduling, cost reporting, payment application process, and project status reporting.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills to evaluate current systems and processes and implement “best in class” practices going forward.
  • Ability to think outside the box for solutions to reduce store costs and meet timelines.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite products and Project Management Software.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with a self-starting personality.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Detail oriented with a focus on delivering high quality results.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, development and construction processes and pricing.
  • Demonstrates record of successful project management in complex situations.
  • Must be resourceful, flexible, and maintain the ability to react and respond quickly with a focus on accuracy.
  • Experience managing/leading a team of direct reports.
  • Ability to communicate and partner effectively & cross functionally with Real Estate, Design, Legal, Operations, Purchasing, Operations, Culinary teams, etc.
