Summary of Duties: The Biotechnology Scientist will be responsible for carrying out research and development projects related to the bio-production process that Prometheus Materials has developed. This person will assess algae strain cultivation parameters and bio-mineralization process conditions as well as research, develop, implement, and troubleshoot the bio-production process as needed to meet bio-production needs for the company; the scope of this work will range from laboratory to pilot scale and will be hands-on. Additionally, the Biotechnology Scientist will aid in research and development that is needed for Prometheus Materials’ expanding bio-production operations. The Biotechnology Scientist will report to the Director of Biotechnology.

 

Required Competencies:

  • Education: Ph.D. degree in biochemistry or engineering with 2 years of industrial/start-up company work experience or M.S. degree in biochemistry or engineering with 5 years of related work experience.
  • Independent, Active, and Results-Oriented Work Style: Must be comfortable working independently without day-to-day instruction and actively in environments that require technical research one day, troubleshooting the next, and equipment maintenance/repair another. Must be able to demonstrate value of work conducted through a results driven approach (increased yield, lower cost, etc.).
  • Microalgae Cultivation: Demonstrated ability of maintaining and cultivating microalgae in laboratory and pilot scale quantities as well as handling microalgae culture rotation and harvest schedule.
  • Biochemistry: Thorough understanding of biochemical principles and ability to implement them in an applied and bottom-line oriented manner.
  • Engineering: Thorough understanding of engineering principles and ability to implement them in an applied and bottom-line oriented manner.
  • Bioprocess Development: Demonstrated ability to take on new or existing bioprocesses and implement design changes or improvements.
  • Research and Development: Experience in R&D settings and desire to approach challenges with unrelenting inquisition and determination.  
  • Active Listening and Communication: Follow verbal and written instructions, ask questions when appropriate, and communicate results in a clear, concise, and timely manner.
  • Physical Strength: Able to lift up to 50 pounds and repetitively or continuously sit, stand, bend, or reach for periods of up to 10 hours per day.
  • Safety: Ensure the physical safety of oneself and one’s co-workers at all times. Follow all safety-related guidelines and instructions given by supervisors and co-workers to safely operate and clean equipment.
  • Computer Software: Ability to operate Windows or Mac based PC systems as well as Microsoft and GSuite applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Google Sheets, etc.).

 

Preferred Competencies:

  • Lean: Basic knowledge of Lean Manufacturing practices including 5s, Six Sigma, etc.
  • Sourcing: General knowledge with material sourcing for production environments.
  • Concrete: Knowledge and/or experience with concrete and masonry construction is a plus.

Compensation: $80-120K per year DOE with benefits available
