Job Summary: The Congressional News Reporter is responsible for aggressively covering Capitol Hill, developing sources in congressional offices, breaking news, and insightfully reporting on legislative activities, policy debates, and political developments. This role offers a unique opportunity to inform the public and shape the narrative surrounding key issues impacting our nation.

Job Duties:

  • Write timely stories and develop a daily newsletter about legislative proposals, congressional testimony, committee meetings, and other relevant events.
  • Produce accurate and timely news stories that provide detailed analysis and exclusive scoops on congressional proceedings.
  • Develop relationships within Congress, including lawmakers, staffers, lobbyists, and experts, to gather insider perspectives and exclusive insights.
  • Conduct interviews with key stakeholders to obtain valuable information and quotes for news articles.
  • Craft engaging and informative news articles and features on congressional activities and developments. Ensure all content is well-written, compelling, and adheres to journalistic standards of accuracy and fairness.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends, legislative priorities, and political dynamics shaping Capitol Hill. Monitor debates, speeches, press conferences, and social media activity to identify noteworthy stories and angles for coverage.
  • Develop and maintain a key following of congressional influencers on social media platforms.
  • Work closely with editors, fellow reporters, and multimedia producers to coordinate coverage plans, brainstorm story ideas, and enhance the quality and reach of news content.
  • Manage tight deadlines and prioritize assignments effectively to deliver breaking news stories and comprehensive coverage of ongoing developments in Congress.
  • Verify information, fact-check claims, and corroborate sources to ensure the accuracy and credibility of all news reports and articles.


Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree

Experience: 4-5 years of relevant experience in journalism, policy, or working for Congress

Communication: Strong writing skills with a keen eye for detail and an ability to distill complex issues into clear, concise narratives

Technology: Microsoft Suite

  • Excellent research skills and a passion for investigative journalism.
  • Ability to cultivate sources, conduct interviews, and build relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with AP style and journalistic ethics.
  • Proficiency in digital media tools and platforms, including content management systems, social media, and multimedia storytelling techniques.
  • Knowledge of U.S. government structures, legislative processes, and political dynamics.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a collaborative team, demonstrating superb interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and a proven track record of meeting deadlines in a fast-paced news environment.
  • Ability to write in a way that translates congressional dynamics to the grassroots.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in responding to evolving news cycles, shifting priorities, and unforeseen developments on Capitol Hill.
