Inpatient Coding Auditor Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive audits of inpatient medical records to identify coding discrepancies and ensure compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid)
  • Analyze complex medical documentation to assess the validity of DRG (Diagnosis Related Group) assignments and coding accuracy
  • Research and resolve coding inconsistencies through collaboration with physicians, coders and other healthcare providers
  • Document audit findings and recommendations with clear explanations for corrective action
  • Educate and mentor coding staff on best practices and coding updates
  • Participate in the development and implementation of internal coding audit processes
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest coding regulations and industry trends

Inpatient Coding Auditor Requirements:

  • Active AHIMA certification is mandatory (RHIT, RHIA or CCS)
  • 3+ years of experience in inpatient coding auditing within an acute hospital setting
  • Strong understanding of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS coding systems and inpatient coding guidelines
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen eye for detail
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships and collaborate effectively with various healthcare professionals
  • Proficient in computer skills and experience with hospital coding software (e.g., EPIC, Cerner)
