Position Summary:

Medical Technologist 1 is professional technology work in the performance of diagnostic tests and procedures in the clinical laboratory of a county medical facility. Employees in this classification are professionally trained medical technologists responsible for performing various diagnostic analyses, morphologic studies and quantitative and qualitative determinations on specimen samples of blood, urine, cerebral spinal and other body fluids and products in accordance with recognized scientific theory, principles and techniques. Emphasis of the work is on independent judgment in determining accurate test results and recognition of critical values. Supervision may be exercised over Laboratory Aides, Assistants and Technicians, Medical Technology Students and Laboratory Clerks as required. Supervision is received from a professional superior who reviews results for professional quality and assists as abnormal laboratory results are found.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Produce accurate results according to standard operating procedures for different age groups.
• Match patient identifying information on specimens with work documents without errors.
• Coordinate simultaneous procedures accurately.
• Consult supervisor for additional assignments and complete them.
• Complete patient and quality control procedures within defined time limits.
• Interpret patient and quality control samples, taking appropriate action as per protocol.
• Recognize and document efforts to resolve equipment or procedural problems.
• Participate actively in QA/QI programs.
• Complete routine tasks without direct supervision.
• Perform preventive maintenance on instruments and document corrective actions.
• Prioritize workload in response to STAT requests.
• Learn new procedures within agreed time frames.
• Maintain inventory of supplies and keep them stocked.
• Adapt to modification of work assignments and adjust schedule for patient care.
• Demonstrate concern for cleanliness and practice infection control.
• Assume ownership of issues and follow them to resolution.
• Stay updated on revisions in procedures and advances in the profession.
• Offer innovative solutions for efficient laboratory service delivery.
• Maintain organized written work documents with appropriate dates and initials.
• Monitor pending work and critical values as per protocol.
• Communicate regularly with subordinates and supervisor, providing initial non-technical resources for problem-solving.
• Demonstrate practical decision-making skills and leadership traits.
• Prepare and record proficiency testing, or perform specialized tasks according to protocol.
• Take charge of the department in the absence of supervisors.
• Assist in providing adequate staffing.
• Perform instruments preventive maintenance procedures daily, weekly, and monthly.
• Perform A.M. or P.M. start-up procedures at the beginning of each shift.
• Regularly inspect all instruments and ensure proper working condition.
• Perform quality control with each test and ensure accuracy of reported results.
• Verify patient name on specimens and labels against test ordered.
• Ensure test results correlate with diagnosis.
• Perform scheduled tests as required.
• File QC and maintenance records promptly and retrieve information as requested.
• Participate in CAP surveys and complete them in a timely manner.
• Check temperatures of equipment and log readings daily.
• Assist in weekly inventory and ordering supplies as necessary.
• Perform venipuncture accurately and explain procedures to patients.
• Follow instructions when reconstituting controls and log reagents received.
• Ensure specimens are at room temperature before procedures.
• Put supplies away following specifications to avoid spoilage.
• Report panic values to RN and patient's physician promptly.
• Complete work procedures without sacrificing quality.
• Avoid allowing specimens to stand for extended periods.
• Perform stat orders promptly and report results within one hour.
• Complete work left from other shifts to ensure continuity.
• Demonstrate behaviors of service excellence and CARE values.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Experience:

Generally requires 1 to 3 years of related experience.

Education:

Associate's degree in related field is required. Bachelor's degree in related field is strongly preferred.

License Certification:

Valid Florida license as a Medical Technologist in area of specialty is required. ASCP Certification is preferred.

Physical Demands:

Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices. Jobs in this group require frequent visual acuity to perform activities related to extended use of computers. Work Environment:

Jobs in this group are required to function in a fast paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent and stressful situations. Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, insurance companies and other members of the public. Function is subject to inside environmental conditions, with occasional outdoor exposures. Exposure to various environments such as: communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a hospital and medical office environment. May also be exposed to needle sticks, airborne infections, medical gases, X-Ray, chemical exposures and other potential hazards. Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when exposed to infectious/clinical hospital environment.
