Position: Video Switcher Operator
Location: The Las Vegas Strip, Las Vegas, NV
Reports To: Creative Director, Stage Manager
Overview: The Video Switcher Operator is responsible for controlling live feeds from video capture (cameras) during a live production, ensuring that every moment and performance is visually compelling and expertly documented. This role requires extensive experience in switching live camera feeds, strong theatrical skills, and the ability to collaborate with the creative team to bring the show to life on screen. The Video Switcher Operator calls cues for a team of camera operators, operates the camera switcher, and works closely with the show's Creative Director to design and execute camera angles, movements, and shots that enhance the overall visual experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Creative Direction: Work closely with the Creative Director to plan camera angles, shots, and movements that best capture the performance. Translate the Director's vision into a visually dynamic presentation for a live audience.
Team Coordination: Coordinate/call a team of camera personnel, ensuring that they are well-prepared and synchronized during the show. Provide clear instructions and feedback to achieve the desired shot compositions and movements.
Live Show Capture: Coordinate live camera operations during performances, communicating with the camera operators to ensure smooth transitions, timely cuts, and effective shot execution. Operate the camera switcher to manage live video feeds, ensuring that the correct camera angles are broadcast at the right moments.
Technical Quality: Ensure that all camera equipment is properly set up, in position, and functioning before each performance. Collaborate with the stage manager and technical crew to address any technical issues that may arise during the show.
Camera Switcher Operation: Personally operate the camera switcher during live performances, controlling the transition between camera feeds to create a seamless visual narrative. Make quick, informed decisions on which camera angles to highlight at each moment in the show.
Rehearsals: Attend camera rehearsals to familiarize yourself and the team with the show's flow, blocking, and key moments. Work with the performers and crew to perfect camera timing, coordination, and switcher operations.
Footage Review: Review recorded footage to assess the quality of the shots and identify areas for improvement. Provide feedback to camera operators and make necessary adjustments for future performances.
Safety Compliance: Ensure that yourself and all camera operations adhere to safety protocols, especially when working in confined or elevated spaces. Monitor the safety of the camera crew and equipment during live performances.
Collaboration: Maintain open communication with the Creative Director, Stage Manager, and other departments to ensure that camera operations align with the overall vision and technical requirements of the show.
Problem-Solving: Quickly address any technical or creative challenges that arise during the show, ensuring that appropriate camera feeds continue seamlessly without disrupting the performance.
Qualifications:
Extensive experience as a Video Switcher Operator or in a similar role, particularly in live theater. Broadcast and live event experience is good, but will not be considered as relevant as live theater or comparable artistic performance switching.
Strong understanding of camera operation as it applies to live theater, shot composition, live video production, and camera/video switcher equipment.
Proven operating skills with the ability to translate the artistic vision of the show to the audience.
Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse production team.
Ability to work under pressure and adapt to the fast-paced environment of a live theater show.
Familiarity with a wide range of camera equipment and the technical aspects of video production.
Physical capability to execute camera setups and operations, including working in confined or elevated spaces.
OSHA 10 certification required.
First Aid certification is a plus.
A passion for cinema, filmography, and live theater is a plus.
