Job Summary:

This individual provides a dual role, supporting both Engineering and production efforts in the Optical Coating Department. Activities include collaboration with a small team of Optical and Coating Engineers, developing reflective, anti-reflective, and filter coatings in spectrums ranging from visible to long-wave infrared (LWIR). The job is responsible for creating new designs and optimizing existing designs and processes, improving manufacturability, performance, and cost. The job will also lead root cause analysis / corrective action activities for coating related processes.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and drive continuous improvement of manufacturing processes.
  • Support troubleshooting of existing optical coating processes and equipment – including pumps, evaporation sources, ion sources, crystal monitors, sputtering cathodes, etc.
  • Determine root causes of coating failures and create corrective actions to eliminate future failures.
  • Design/develop coatings to satisfy customer requirements.
  • Optimize existing coating designs, decreasing sensitivity and improving manufacturing yields.
  • Provide timely production support for coating design modifications as required.
  • Perform uniformity testing of coatings, adjusting chamber tooling factors as required to ensure uniform coatings across lot sizes.
  • Use an array of characterization equipment, including spectrophotometers and optical microscopes.
  • Lead/support troubleshooting of production equipment and metrology.
  • Support maintenance during repair and maintenance of equipment and metrology.


Job Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s of Science, advanced degree is a plus. Degree in Physics or Engineering strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in optical coatings strongly preferred.
  • Well-versed in different deposition techniques, particularly e-beam, IAD, and PECVD.
  • Adept with Filmstar or similar coating design software package.
  • Experience in designing for different wavebands, including visible, near infrared, mid-wave infrared and long-wave infrared preferred.
  • Proficient in coating material characterization, including refractive index and mechanical properties strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Solidworks, LabView, MS Office Suite of applications preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings, process specifications, and documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality.
  • Self-motivated, ability to work in a team or independently.
  • Ability to multi-task.
