Root 3 Power is seeking an experienced Electrical Designer to join our team in Houston, TX. The Electrical Designer will execute a wide range of drafting and design assignments pertaining to the design, construction, control, and operation of low and medium voltage electrical power systems. 


Position – Full-time, Non-Exempt

Location – Houston, TX

Travel – 0-10%


Typical tasks include:

• Prepare 2D drawings in AutoCAD for construction packages including, but not limited to:

  • Single-Line & Three-Line Diagrams
  • Equipment Elevations (Switchgear, Motor Control Centers, Transformers, and Panels)
  • Breaker Control Schematics
  • Wiring Diagrams
  • Control Panel Layouts
  • Plot Plans (Power, Grounding, Instrumentation, and Conduit/Cable Tray)
  • Conduit & Cable Schedules

• Develop preliminary electrical drawings from minimal information and redlines or sketches.

•  Perform sizing and electrical calculations such as cable sizing, conduit and cable tray fill, and voltage drop

•  Check field red-lined drawings and produce accurate as-built drawings and documentation

•  Check engineering drawings for accuracy and adherence to client design specifications

•  Ensure electrical design meets or exceeds the requirements provided in industry standards such as the NEC, NFPA, NESC, and IEEE

• Participate in project meetings

• Occasionally travel to domestic sites for field surveys and data collection


Job Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in CAD or Drafting from a Technical Institution preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of AutoCAD experience required
  • Microsoft Office software experience preferred
  • Must be willing to learn electrical concepts applicable to the design of power systems
  • Knowledgeable in the industry codes and standards such as NFPA and NESC preferred
  • Familiarity with protective relays and circuit breaker control schematics is preferred
  • Strong communication skills, with ability to work directly with team members to develop engineering drawing packages from proposal development through project execution
  • Must have the legal right to work in the United States. Root 3 Power does not provide immigration or work visa sponsorship
  • Must be capable of standing, walking, climbing stairs, carrying tools/equipment up to 50 lbs., and wearing appropriate PPE for the work environment
  • Able to travel by car or plane to client jobsites within the United States
