This position will require the ability to interpret accurately in both the simultaneous and consecutive modes. Listening/comprehending and speaking from English to Somali and/or Swahili and vice versa will be required.

What will you do as the Somali and Swahili Language Interpreter?

  • Provide language services and facilitate effective communication between leaders, team members, and guests of Turning Stone Enterprises. Interpret between a wide range of people with diverse voices, accents, speaking tempos and personalities.
  • Relay concepts, emotions, intentions, and ideas between languages. Impart thought, purpose, spirit, and tone of speakers from source language into target language and vice versa.
  • Attend conferences and meetings and act as official translator to mediate discussion.
  • Convert written materials from other language as identified by appropriate parties into English or vice versa, such as information packets, publications, guidebooks, web pages, trainings, or letters.
  • Interpret both technical terminology and conversational language.
  • Read aloud documents in a language other than that in which they were written.
  • Identify terms and words with conflicting meanings to determine which alternative provides clarity and reflects the original purpose of the message.
  • Verify, modify and edit translations to compensate for discrepancies in technical terms and to guarantee that the final content is consistent with original material.


To be successful as the Somali and Swahili Language Interpreter you'll need:

  • A proven proficiency in the English and Somali and/or Swahili language; comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Excellent listening, retention, and note-taking skills to maintain a high level of accuracy during interpretation.
  • Education or work experience in language-related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation or interpretation preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, evaluation, assessment, collaboration, teamwork, relationship management and decision-making skills.
