General Statement of Duties
The primary function of the Sound Engineer is to prepare and operate all sound related equipment and rental equipment for touring and school productions; and assist in the set-up, running and strike of sound systems, stage lighting, audio/visual and theatrical equipment necessary for specific events. This position requires a positive attitude, good customer service, previous experience working with live events with performers of all ages. This position is on-site in Wickenburg, AZ, will a level one fingerprint card and will require a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the operation, with night and weekend work required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Insures operational readiness of all sound-related technical systems and serves as Sound Engineer for all events.
• Professionally interact and assist with technical teams from touring productions
• Performs regular inspections, maintenance (including preventative) and repair work as required for both the equipment and the facility; troubleshoots and repairs equipment breakdowns.
• Assists in the load-in and loud-out of equipment for productions.
• Maintain detailed records of sound setups, equipment configurations, and any changes made during performances.
• May serve as primary pre-production coordinator for annual school musicals and plays, graduation, district sponsored events, etc. Actively participates in set building and design for same events.
• Instructs students within the parameters of the high school drama teacher’s technical theatre curriculum, provides hands-on learning experiences for students.
• Provides technical theatre instruction for Camp Imagination.
• Provides input to Technical Director for departmental expenditures, equipment purchases and capital improvements.
• Maintains neat, clean and organized theatre and stage environment.
• Assists with maintenance of all theater equipment and work spaces.
• Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and safety practices.
Knowledge of
• Operating and troubleshooting a variety of sound equipment, including digital and analog mixers, microphones, and audio processors.
• Acoustics, audio signal flow, and sound reinforcement techniques.
• Standard practices in theatre operations;
• Safe working practices in a theatrical environment;
• Procedures and techniques required for installation, operation and maintenance of theatrical sound systems equipment as well as knowledge and experience with safety requirements associated with such equipment;
• Principles and practices of high voltage electrical circuits including single phase electricity, three phase electricity, and cable wiring;
• Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.
Ability to
• Work independently and with little supervision.
• Modify and design equipment and systems to meet event requirements;
• Design and run sound for a production;
• Understand written and verbal instructions and apply them to the installation of sound, lighting, and scenery systems;
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; provide calm leadership under pressure;
• Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
• Demonstrate initiative, resourcefulness, integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;
• Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly.
Experience and Training Required
• Certification in technical theatre production or related field; AND
• Two (2) years experience in technical theatre positions; OR
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the comparable knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
