Our client, a large food importing company located in Paramus, NJ is looking for an experienced Director of Imports. This is a critical role for the company and need someone with strong credentials with 10+ years of experience. The Director of Imports must have experience with the following responsibilities below.


In this role, the Director of Import must have strong leadership skills and be able to lead and mentor a team of logistics/imports professionals, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration. Having the ability to modernize and restructure the imports department to be more efficient in daily processing.


The Director of Imports must have experience developing a better ocean freight strategy to formulate and execute a comprehensive strategy for ocean freight operations, aligning with company goals. Track key performance indicators (KPIs) and report on the efficiency and effectiveness of ocean freight operations. Resolve issues with carriers regarding space allocation, timing, rate disputes, and other operational concerns. Identify and mitigate risks related to ocean freight operations, including geopolitical risks, environmental factors, and market fluctuations.


Monitor and control costs associated with ocean freight, identifying opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency improvement. Work with the internal pricing team to ensure all customers costs take into account correct ocean freight rates.


Must have experience being able to deal with vendor negotiations and negotiate contracts and terms with shipping lines and other logistics providers to secure the best rates and services. A key aspect here is already having strong connections with major steamship lines and forwarders.


Implement and utilize logistics management software and tools to streamline operations and enhance data accuracy, both related to ocean freights and overall PO lifecycle maintenance. Must have strong computer skills, analytical mindset, and experience launching new software within a company.


Understand the full import lifecycle of goods with experience working with customs brokers, government agencies and dray carriers.


Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction by maintaining service quality and resolving any issues promptly. Stay updated with industry trends and innovations, incorporating best practices into operations.


Job Requirements:

Industry Knowledge: Candidates should have a strong grasp of import operations, and regulations such as Customs/FDA/USDA requirements, which are critical for managing ocean freight efficiently. Communication Skills: Strong communication skills are vital for effectively engaging with stakeholders, including shipping companies, customs officials, and internal teams involved in the freight process.

Attention to Detail: The role demands meticulous attention to detail, particularly in documentation and record-keeping tasks to ensure accurate and compliant processing of cargo.

Computer Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook for efficient data management.

Team Player: Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Organizational Skills: Highly organized with the ability to identify priorities and act accordingly to meet deadlines.

Adaptability: Willingness and ability to take on increased challenges and responsibilities as needed.
