The Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) is responsible for the maintenance, repair, installation, and calibration of medical equipment and devices. This role ensures that all biomedical equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards. BMETs work closely with clinical staff to troubleshoot issues and provide technical support for various healthcare technologies used in patient care.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintenance and Repair: Perform preventive maintenance (PM), calibration, and repairs on medical equipment, including diagnostic, therapeutic, and monitoring devices (e.g., ventilators, infusion pumps, imaging systems, patient monitors).
  • Installation and Setup: Install and configure new biomedical equipment and systems in healthcare settings, ensuring proper functionality and integration with hospital infrastructure.
  • Troubleshooting and Diagnostics: Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues with medical devices, collaborating with clinical staff to minimize downtime and ensure patient safety.
  • Compliance and Safety: Ensure all equipment complies with regulatory standards such as FDA, IEC, ISO, and hospital-specific policies. Perform safety inspections and electrical safety testing as required.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed service records, including maintenance schedules, repair history, calibration logs, and equipment certifications, using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Training and Support: Provide technical support and training to healthcare staff on the proper use, handling, and maintenance of biomedical equipment.
  • Equipment Management: Assist in inventory management, including the procurement, disposal, and storage of medical devices and spare parts.
  • Collaboration: Work with other biomedical technicians, clinical engineers, and medical staff to ensure the proper functioning and operational readiness of medical equipment.
  • Emergency Response: Respond promptly to emergency service requests for malfunctioning equipment, ensuring minimal disruption to patient care.


Qualifications:

  • Education: Associate's degree or equivalent in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electronics, or a related field.
  • Experience: 2+ years of experience in biomedical equipment repair and maintenance. Experience in a hospital or clinical setting is preferred.
  • Certifications: Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) preferred or other relevant certifications (e.g., CBET, CRES, or equivalents).


Skills:

  • Knowledge of medical equipment and systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with tools, test equipment, and software used in biomedical technology.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and safety standards (e.g., NFPA, IEC, ISO).
  • Good communication skills for interacting with clinical staff and management.


Work Environment:

  • The work environment may include hospitals, medical centers, laboratories, and other healthcare settings.
  • Exposure to electrical equipment, mechanical devices, and potentially hazardous materials.
