Title: Spanish Teacher
Position Overview:
Merrick Academy, Queens' pioneering charter school, is seeking a dedicated Spanish Teacher to enhance our language program. This role is integral to fostering a comprehensive understanding of the Spanish language and culture among students. The Spanish Teacher will plan, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program that aligns with our commitment to STEAM and whole-child support, under the supervision of the Principal.
Reports To: Principal
Compensation: Highly competitive, commensurate with experience. Includes a competitive benefits package and extensive professional development opportunities.
Status: Full-Time
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:45 AM - 4:00 PM
FLSA Status: Exempt
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Deliver engaging Spanish language instruction aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) that integrates reading and writing into language learning.
- Create and implement lesson plans that include a variety of instructional strategies such as interactive activities, cultural games, and multimedia resources to facilitate active learning.
- Incorporate aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures into the curriculum, enhancing students' global awareness and appreciation of diversity.
- Utilize assessments to measure student progress and adapt instruction to meet the needs of each student, particularly those with special needs.
- Maintain a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and suitable for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with students and their families, fostering community involvement and support for the Spanish language learning process.
- Collaborate with other teachers to make cross-curricular connections, enhancing the overall educational experience with an interdisciplinary approach.
- Participate in staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities to remain current with pedagogical trends and innovations in language teaching.
Qualifications & Behavioral Competencies:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish, Education with a concentration in Spanish, or related field; Master’s Degree preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of classroom teaching experience, ideally with a focus on language instruction.
- New York State Certification in Spanish Education or equivalent.
- Proficient in utilizing educational technology platforms such as Google Classroom and Zoom.
- Strong instructional, classroom management, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated enthusiasm for Spanish language and culture.
- Ability to interact professionally and constructively with students, colleagues, and parents.
- Passion for contributing to a team-oriented, mission-driven school culture. Open to feedback and committed to continuous professional growth.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
- The role requires occasional physical activities like standing, walking, and handling educational materials, and may involve lifting up to 25 pounds.
- While generally based in a classroom setting, the environment may include exposure to outdoor weather during school activities.
