The Iowa Institute for Cooperatives (IIC) has been supporting cooperatives across the state of Iowa since 1951. Our members come from various industries, including agriculture, credit unions, rural electric, rural telephone, farm credit, petroleum, and more. We provide educational and training programs, timely news updates, and legislative guidance to strengthen the cooperative system. Our goal is to promote new cooperative development and value-added production to ensure the future success of cooperatives in today's competitive economy.


Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for a Director of Government Affairs located in Ames, IA. As the Director of Government Affairs, you will be responsible for managing and coordinating governmental affairs activities, establishing and maintaining relationships with government officials, lobbying for legislative policies and initiatives, and monitoring and analyzing legislative and regulatory activities. Additionally, you will work closely with our network of legislative contacts to advocate for issues that impact our members.


Qualifications

  • Governmental Affairs, Government Relations, and Legislative Relations skills
  • Experience in lobbying and state government
  • Knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with government officials
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of cooperative principles and practices is a plus


Position Requirements: 

1. The successful candidate must be familiar with Iowa legislative procedures and be enthusiastic about using that knowledge in a successful lobbying effort. 

2. The successful candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential and mandatory. 

3. The successful candidate will have a professional and mature demeanor and be able to establish trust and credibility quickly with his/her peers, legislators, and state government officials. 

4. The successful candidate will be flexible and have a “can-do” attitude linking our member cooperatives with government officials. 

5. The successful candidate will support the Iowa Institute for Cooperatives in its mission and the positions established by its members. 

6. The candidate must be proficient in the use of a computer including Microsoft Word and communicating on multiple platforms. 

7. The ideal candidate will have experience in presenting in-person and on a virtual platform. 

 8. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with Iowa cooperatives, as well as working with Boards of Directors. 

 9. Required to register as a lobbyist in the state of Iowa. 

10. The ideal candidate will have a four-year degree or equivalent experience. 

11. The candidate must be licensed to drive in the state of Iowa.
