About the job
As a senior-level Software Engineer at Higher Ground, you'll have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of software projects, including, backend, mobile, and cloud/infrastructure development with the current focus being on back-end infrastructure and applications of our messaging application.
The messaging backend software infrastructure includes:
- A large monolithic message processing system mainly in PHP.
- A small message distributor also in PHP.
- Plugins for passing messages to various third-party systems in NodeJS, Python, and other languages.
- Several user- and admin-facing web applications in PHP, JavaScript, and HTML/CSS, and MySQL databases.
Most components of the system operate in the Azure cloud infrastructure.
The main focus of this position is to serve as a developer, designer, and architect of the backend software infrastructure. Collaborating with junior and senior engineers, you will add new features to existing software, modernize and replace parts of the system for higher performance, flexibility, and scalability. The languages and platforms for new features will be determined based on use, so it is important to be open and willing to experiment with different languages and tools.
As a Lead/Senior Software Engineer, you will lead a small team on various projects from conception to delivery, ensuring successful execution at every stage. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality software releases, focusing on robust performance and reliability. Additionally, you will set technical directions and make key architectural decisions to guide the team toward effective solutions. Ensuring adherence to coding standards, you will educate the team on best practices, fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Acting as a liaison between your team and other teams, you will facilitate effective communication and collaboration across the organization.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a computing major such as Computer Science. Higher degrees are a plus.
- 10+ years of experience in back-end software development and design.
- Expertise in at least one programming language from our tech stack.
- Proficiency in backend development in PHP.
- Experience with design and development of back-end software systems.
- Competency in some of the other languages and tools in our tech stack.
- Willingness and capability for self-learning and exploring new appropriate languages, tools, and technologies.
- Experience with distributed version control systems like Git.
- Familiarity with containerization platforms like Docker.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
In addition to the requirements, the following skills would make you an exceptional candidate for this position:
- Experience with architecting messaging applications for the web, especially in a cloud environment.
- Experience in modernizing legacy software systems to contemporary, scalable frameworks.
- Experience with web development frameworks such as Laravel, React, or Django.
- Knowledge of Azure cloud computing.
