Senior Piping Designer

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Office


RT Patterson has an immediate opening in our Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office for a full-time senior piping designer to lead a design team in the development of installation construction packages for media distribution systems involving water and gas utilities, hydraulics, lubrication, plant air, and HVAC in industrial facilities.


Piping Designer Responsibilities:

  • Interface with Clients, Owners, and Vendors.
  • Develop execution plans of project deliverables.
  • Participate in studies preparing cost estimates for piping systems.
  • Assist in specifying piping system components for low, medium, and high pressure systems.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and piping engineers, clients, owners, contractors, and vendors.
  • Lead the engineering design, and drafting staff to generate P&IDs, equipment layouts, routing diagrams, piping plans, and elevation drawings identifying location of piping components, tie-in points, pipe supports, packaged units, and interfaces with building, structures, foundations, machinery, and electrical systems.
  • Develop piping component lists including pipe, tubing, hoses, fittings, flanges, adaptors, valves, regulators, strainers, filters, gauges, meters, pumps, and specialty items.
  • Review vendor piping components and packaged unit specifications for compatibility with project requirements.
  • Develop ductwork routing plans and elevations for HVAC systems and process related ventilation ducts including vents, louvers, dampers, hoods, blowers, fans, and HVAC units.
  • Review and integrate vendor equipment documentation into construction packages of work.
  • Lead project checking teams to review the engineering drawings and document packages.
  • Provide technical direction to design and drafting staff.
  • Visit customer sites to gather field data for detailed design.
  • Provide field support during construction, commissioning, and start-up.



Piping Designer Requirements:

  • 10-15 years’ experience in design of piping systems.
  • Familiarity with ASME B31 Piping Codes, ANSI Piping Standards, and ASTM Material Standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of piping construction methods and materials.
  • Exposure to API, DOT, AWWA, AWS, NFPA, NACE, OSHA, or local plumbing codes is a plus.
  • Field engineering focused on design support is a plus.
  • Experience with piping systems in the Steel and Aluminum industry is preferred. Experience in other light and heavy industry is also acceptable.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office suite of applications.
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling of piping systems is required. Autodesk Plant 3D is preferred.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD software is required.
  • Thorough understanding of CAD and drafting standards.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and comfortable with working in a team environment.
  • Ability to travel within the United States to customer sites.
  • Willingness to learn something new every day.
