As an Infection Preventionist, you will:
- Be responsible for preventing and controlling the spread of healthcare-associated infections at client.
- Surveillance activity includes infection outcome and process measures for both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Collect and analyze data, investigate outbreaks, observe practices, participate in patient rounds, perform education, and design and lead interventions to improve infection control.
- Conduct environment of care rounds and other site visits as needed
- Address infection control issues within the medical center as well as those in the community that impacts patients admitted to the hospital.
- Help to set infection control policies and serves as a resource to administrators, physicians, staff, and the community regarding infection control practices.
- Have scheduled and as needed on call responsibilities.
You have:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Science or other related health field; Master’s Degree in Public Health/Industrial Hygiene preferred
- 3-4 years’ work experience in an Infection Control setting; experience working in an ambulatory care setting is a plus
Job Summary
The Infection Preventionist (IP) is responsible for surveillance and risk education activities for patients at MSK.
Surveillance activities involve both the inpatient and outpatient setting in order to measure outcomes over continuum of care.
Risk reduction activities include addressing infection control issues within the medical center as well as those in the community
that impact patients admitted to the hospital. The IP helps to set infection control policies and serves as a resource to
administrators, physicians, staff, and the community regarding infection control practices.
Job Responsibilities
Leads and facilitates Infection Control initiatives
Leads and facilitates major infection control initiatives, including multiple departments, service lines, platforms regarding the integration of infection control and prevention programs and strategies for improvement.
Oversees projects to integrate infection control standards. Collaborates with multiple departments, services and administration.
Infection Control Surveillance
Develops risk assessments for each site based on population served, procedures done and annual review of statistics, incidents, infections in the
area. Monitors environmental concerns related to infection control and provides consultation of preventative or corrective measures. Assures all
new infection control initiatives are implemented throughout the center.
Infection Control Compliance
Makes scheduled rounds to each site.
Observes staff practice for infection control compliance such as hand hygiene, isolation precautions, and equipment cleaning.
Observes clinical procedures to assure compliance with infection control standards. Corrects non-compliant activities and provides immediate educational support, when indicated.
Conducts tracers using Joint Commission methodology to assure compliance with standards.
Conducts rounds to monitor environmental sanitation, safety and infection control procedures. Assures compliance with sterilization and disinfection
procedures.
Observes staff practice for infection control compliance such as hand hygiene, isolation precautions, and equipment cleaning. Observes clinical
procedures to assure compliance with infection control standards.
Corrects non-compliant activities and provides immediate educational support, when indicated.

Data Analysis
Data analysis- based on the site specific risk assessments, develops surveillance indicators for each site.
Reviews daily culture results through the laboratory computer system. Collects and analyses data from various
sources within the center. Examples include data on Surgical Site
Infections, Central venous catheter infections, infusion related infections,
and catheter associated urinary tract infections. Enters data into the NHSN program if required. Analyzes the data for trends and infection rates.
Analysis of surveillance indicators with further development of infection
control indicators based on results. Provides feedback to clinical staff.
Prepares for Joint Commission/ NY State compliance.
