POSITION SUMMARY:
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) seeks a dedicated and experienced Vaccine Formulation Scientist to join the Vaccine Production Program (VPP). This role involves collaborating with a multidisciplinary project team to evaluate and develop stable formulations for vaccine candidates at the Vaccine Research Center (VRC). The successful candidate will design and oversee fit-for-purpose formulation and stability studies, analyze and interpret data, and develop assays for the characterization and stability testing of recombinant protein-based vaccines and other related products. This position requires strong expertise in protein or vaccine formulation, excellent communication skills, and the ability to contribute to regulatory filings and strategic guidance within the team.
TASKS. The contractor shall:
- Collaborate with project teams to evaluate and develop stable formulations for vaccine candidates, both in liquid and frozen states.
- Work with the Director of Formulation, Project Management, and other functional leads to develop formulation development plans, including timelines based on specific project requirements.
- Design fit-for-purpose formulation and stability studies and oversee their technical execution.
- Personally execute studies as needed and analyze, collate, and interpret study data.
- Develop and execute assays for biological product characterization and stability testing.
- Present data and analysis in small group settings.
- Write and review technical reports and protocols documenting formulation, stability, and method development studies.
- Contribute to regulatory filings in collaboration with other team members.
- Provide strategic guidance and technical instruction on method and study design.
- Collaborate with personnel to achieve professional development goals.
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert in one or more analytical or theoretical areas relevant to formulation development at the VRC.
REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline, OR M.S. in the same fields.
- Minimum of 2 years of industry, government, or equivalent experience in protein or vaccine formulation, stability, and characterization.
- 8+ years of combined industry, government, and/or academic experience in protein formulation or related fields.
- Strong knowledge of protein and/or polymer chemistry theory.
- Proficient understanding of biophysical and bioanalytical properties of proteins and relevant analytical techniques.
- Hands-on experience with protein/polymer spectroscopic, calorimetric, or particle sizing techniques (e.g., UV-Vis, Fluorescence, Circular Dichroism spectroscopy, DLS, HIAC, DSC).
- Proficiency with one or more data analysis software platforms (e.g., Excel, Prism, SigmaPlot).
- Ability to work independently with excellent time management skills to handle multiple projects.
- Excellent interpersonal and group communication skills.
- Strong written communication skills.
