VP, Program Management & Development Operations


A well-funded and highly innovative start up from Third Rock Ventures is emerging out of stealth with a syndicate of marquee investors and is seeking an experienced Vice President of Program Management and Development Operations. This individual will serve as an integral component of the company’s R&D organization and be responsible for coordinating the advancement of the company’s maturing pipeline of biotherapeutics. Reporting to the CEO and working closely with the CSO and CMO, this individual will develop and integrate processes and strategies to ensure cross-functional, organizational alignment and execution across both pre-clinical and clinical development.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and strategic vision for the Project Management and Portfolio Strategy function and organization.
  • Ensure the development and maintenance of project plans, timelines, resourcing and budgets in collaboration with project technical leaders and cross-functional members of teams, including Drug Discovery, Safety Assessment, Regulatory, Technical Operations & Clinical Development
  • Instill a culture of operational excellence, ensuring optimal meeting structure, conduct and outputs, decision making, risk assessment, risk management and lessons learned.
  • Identify and champion Project Management and Portfolio Strategy best practices, including the use of contemporary templates, tools, and processes to drive efficiency, alignment, decision making, and communication - all leading to effective program planning and execution.
  • Oversee management, facilitation and decision-making of governance committees for the development of a leading biotherapeutics portfolio; regularly review and as needed, partner with leadership to optimize governance processes.
  • Drive cross-functional resource, financial, and capacity planning; contribute to long-range R&D and budgetary planning.
  • Ensure effective communication of project and portfolio planning to the broader organization, in partnership with Communications.

About You

  • BA/BS in business, marketing, finance, science/technology, or related field. An advanced degree (e.g. Ph.D., MBA) or certification (e.g. PMP) is highly desirable.
  • 12-15+ years of pharmaceutical/biotech industry experience and a minimum of 8 years in program, portfolio and/or alliance management.
  • Experience working directly with Drug Discovery, Safety Assessment, Regulatory, Technical Operations & Clinical Development.
  • Demonstrable productivity and innovation in Project & Portfolio Management and a track record of accomplishment in the field.
  • Extensive knowledge of biotherapeutic research and development and thorough understanding of the tasks and deliverables required to mature assets through preclinical development, IND filing and drug development.
  • A strong understanding of the people, processes and infrastructure involved in managing across the drug development lifecycle.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of project planning methods and techniques
  • Ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks with a strong attention to detail in a high-intensity, high-visibility environment.
  • Strong communication and ability to influence across all levels of the organization, including executive leadership and intact teams, accompanied with the ability to resolve conflicts.
  • Strong analytical capabilities, including quantitative and qualitative assessment skills and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to distill complex issues and ideas into simple, comprehensible terms.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring and team building skills.
