Job Summary:


The qualified candidate will assist the MDOT SHA District 4 Traffic office with the preparation, evaluation, and analysis of various complex, sensitive, and diverse types of technical traffic engineering studies and make recommendations of engineering solutions.


The position requires analytical thinking, adaptive and independent problem solving, creativity, innovation, and ability to utilize design engineers to complete task assignments. The qualified candidate shall be dependable, open-minded, focused, and attentive to details including project schedules, budgets, and design quality.


The position will be approximately 50% office-based work and 50% field work.


Responsibilities and Duties:


  • Review traffic control design plans including Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans.
  • Conduct peak hour field reviews during morning and evening peak hours.
  • Review Access management plans and Traffic Impact Studies (TIS).
  • Provide construction management services including reviewing MOT and attending field meetings.
  • Respond to citizen concerns and complaints about traffic operations and safety. This may include attending community meetings in the evening and giving presentations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:


  • BSCE in Civil Engineering or appropriate discipline
  • 2-3 years of experience in performing traffic engineering studies,
  • Some previous coursework or training in Traffic Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning, Geometric Design, Traffic Signal Systems, Urban Transit Planning, or related subjects.
  • Working knowledge of the following software: Synchro, SimTraffic, VISSIM, Corsim, SIDRA, HCS, Visum, TransCAD, Cube, ISATe, IHSDM, ArcGIS
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft office products and GIS applications
  • Ability to work well within a project team by building relationships and teamwork
  • High-level of integrity, ethics, quality service, and safety
