The St. Louis Area Foodbank is adding a Director of Development to our dynamic Philanthropy team. This position is responsible for overseeing all development operations, including philanthropy data strategy and management, prospect research, direct marketing campaigns, annual giving campaigns, grant writing and reporting, programs and processes for donor stewardship, department budgeting, reporting, and analytics. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader of people, energetic, ambitious, goal-oriented, and creative, with a successful track record for building strong and productive relationships both internally and externally.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Development is responsible for identifying and growing the people, programs, and processes needed to increase community support for St. Louis Area Foodbank.


Working both independently and collaboratively, this individual will be responsible for ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of day-to-day philanthropy operations, with a strong focus on continuous improvement. He/she/they will oversee a robust direct marketing program, working closely with selected vendors and internal key stakeholders. This Director must be data driven and capable of identifying and improving systems. The ideal candidate must be an organized, critical thinker with the ability to implement systems and enhance processes while effectively delivering results within tight time constraints.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Development Operations:

  • Manage production process, budget, and schedule for both mail and digital direct marketing appeals, including vendor management.
  • Generate new revenue and broaden the base of support for the St. Louis Area Foodbank
  • Working closely with the Director of Philanthropy, develop, manage, and implement a strategic donor pipeline and dynamic donor journey program.
  • Oversee and support the research and pursuit of government and local corporate and foundation grant-makers for additional funding opportunities.
  • Devise, maintain and implement an annual development plan.
  • Accurately project, track and communicate fundraising progress towards budget goals.
  • Oversee tax credit programs.
  • Oversee compliance for philanthropy as related to United Way, Feeding America, and other key partnerships.


Grant Writing:

  • Oversee a talented grant team.
  • Maintain a portfolio of grant funders.
  • Oversee effective processes for prospecting, writing, editing, and reporting on grants.
  • Exhibit strong expository writing skills.
  • Ability to actively listen and build strong, compelling narratives.
  • Compose program appropriate budgets.
  • Work closely with the Finance Department to ensure budget detail accuracy.
  • Work closely with all departments (facilities, operations, partner agency services, product sourcing, programs, etc.) to proactively identify opportunities based on organizational priorities and needs.
  • Build accurate grant narratives to quantify and qualify impact expectations and outcomes.


Philanthropy Data Management:

  • Work closely with the Philanthropy Database Manager to oversee the management of the fundraising database (Raiser's Edge NXT), ensuring that all information is entered according to protocol, updated, and accurate.
  • Collaborate with other departments to identify opportunities to connect, share, and streamline data.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for data to enhance donor relationships with SLAFB.
  • Oversee and maintain a robust donor pipeline.
  • Collaborate with other departments to streamline and improve data collection and sharing.
  • Oversee and support the creation of consistent and accurate philanthropy and donor reports and analytics.


Leadership and Staff Management:

  • Directly supervise, coach, and mentor the Development Operations team, including Grants and Philanthropy Data.
  • Work closely with the Director of Philanthropy to ensure proper movement between annual giving and major/planned giving programs.
  • Works closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications to ensure alignment on messaging and consistency in philanthropy-related communications.
  • Assists in developing a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.
  • Actively nurture and steward the professional development of direct reports.
  • Proactively seek out opportunities to refine leadership skills.
  • Provide thought leadership to staff, volunteers, and Board members involved in the fundraising process.
  • Work collaboratively with Chief Development Officer and the Philanthropy Team to develop strategic priorities aligned with annual initiatives that require funding and resources.
  • Serves on the organization's Leadership Team.


Other Responsibilities:

  • Actively engage internal stakeholders to pursue funding prospects that align with priorities.
  • Maintain active affiliations with appropriate fundraising networks and organizations.
  • Provide content to the Marketing and Communications Department for various collateral and social media content.
  • Encourage a culture of developing team members to assume positions of increased responsibility with an evolving and growing non-profit organization while creating a great organizational culture.
  • Collaborate with and help cultivate and maintain synergies between the Philanthropy and Marketing and Communications teams.
  • As appropriate, attend meetings with the Board of Directors and interface with the Board's Development (Philanthropy and Marketing & Communications) Committee and subcommittees.
