Position Overview:

Our client is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Controls Engineer to join their team. This role will focus on the development and implementation of control systems for new products, managing complex engineering projects, and delivering high-quality control circuit designs. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in control systems engineering, from concept through development to deployment, with a strong focus on cross-functional collaboration, technical leadership, and a hands-on approach to system integration. This position requires frequent travel (up to 30%) to customer and vendor sites, in addition to regular office-based work.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Control System Design & Development
  • Lead the design, development, and integration of advanced control systems, including hardware and software components.
  • Create detailed technical documentation, including specifications, schematics, and system architectures for control systems.
  • Implement and test control circuits, ensuring robust performance, functionality, and integration with larger systems.
  • Evaluate and select suitable control system components and technologies, ensuring compatibility and cost-effectiveness.
  • New Product Development
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, software, etc.) to develop and enhance new products.
  • Contribute to the conceptualization and prototyping of new products, driving innovation and optimization of control systems.
  • Design and develop embedded control systems and software for new product prototypes, ensuring alignment with customer requirements and industry standards.
  • Lead efforts to overcome design and implementation challenges, delivering projects within timelines and technical specifications.
  • Project Management
  • Lead engineering projects from initial design through to deployment, ensuring alignment with project goals, budgets, and timelines.
  • Develop detailed project plans, track progress, and provide regular updates to internal teams and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with vendors, contractors, and third-party suppliers, ensuring clear communication and on-time delivery.
  • Manage project risks, resolve issues, and make decisions to keep projects on track and within scope.
  • System Integration & Troubleshooting
  • Lead the integration of control systems into larger systems, ensuring smooth operation and adherence to quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot complex control systems, providing solutions to technical issues during implementation and post-deployment.
  • Conduct system validation, commissioning, and testing to ensure all requirements are met.
  • Customer & Vendor Collaboration (Up to 30% Travel)
  • Travel to customer and vendor sites (up to 30% of the time) to support product installations, system commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Build strong relationships with customers and vendors, ensuring effective communication and providing technical support as needed.
  • Ensure that customer feedback is incorporated into product designs and development processes.
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Drive innovation by researching new technologies, tools, and methods to improve control system performance and efficiency.
  • Suggest improvements to existing systems, designs, and processes to optimize cost, performance, and customer satisfaction.
  • Mentor junior engineers and team members, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.


Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).

Experience:

  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in control systems design and engineering.
  • Strong experience in new product development, with a proven track record of successful product launches.
  • Extensive experience in control circuit design and integration of control systems, including analog and digital systems.
  • Demonstrated success in project management, including managing complex, multi-phase projects, coordinating resources, and meeting project deadlines.
  • Experience with PLC programming, SCADA systems, HMI design, and embedded systems.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time for customer and vendor site visits.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in control system design tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar software.
  • Strong understanding of control theories, automation protocols, and industry standards (e.g., MODBUS, OPC, Ethernet/IP).
  • Experience with system integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting in both field and lab environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to guide and support a team.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.


Desirable Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience in robotics, motion control systems, or industrial automation.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 or other quality management systems.
  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies or product development lifecycles.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and industry regulations related to control systems.
