Job Summary:
We are seeking an Automation Controls Superintendent to oversee the implementation and maintenance of control and robotic systems at our organic plant. This role involves identifying cost-saving opportunities through improved equipment and systems, supporting and troubleshooting production equipment, and enhancing existing equipment control systems. The superintendent will manage a team of multi-craft and automation technicians.
Key Responsibilities:
- Integrate new automation into existing production lines.
- Review technical specifications and schematics to ensure compliance with engineering standards, NEC, and OSHA requirements.
- Enhance automation and robotic functionality of current production equipment.
- Conduct system evaluations, electrical design, and automation system programming for plant operations.
- Maintain a tracking system for control software.
- Perform root-cause analysis, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain automation and robotic equipment.
- Upgrade and integrate existing equipment with new automation, including updating manuals and wiring diagrams.
- Develop and implement training packages for altered equipment.
- Troubleshoot electrical wiring, relay logic, control and safety circuits, electronic boards, PLCs, touch screens, VFDs, HMIs, contactors, and motors.
- Design and develop human-machine interfaces (HMIs).
- Coordinate with the installation team to ensure adherence to documented processes.
- Manage and assist with preventative and predictive maintenance of automation equipment.
- Train Automation Control Techs and Maintenance Techs on equipment, procedures, and troubleshooting practices.
- Adhere to company policies, including manufacturing and safety practices.
- Ensure compliance with relevant codes and proper documentation.
- Participate in continuous improvement activities to enhance processes, efficiency, quality, and service.
- Provide after-hours troubleshooting assistance to plant departments in a 24/7 operation.
- Follow company policies and procedures, including GMP, HACCP, Health and Safety, and Attendance.
Minimum Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
Experience Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience in an industrial environment.
- Experience with machine controls, PLC ladder logic, and Fanuc robot programming preferred.
- Strong drive for innovation in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience with RCA and CI Tools and Principles.
- High-level analytical thinking and communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to understand different perspectives and interact with all levels of the organization.
Preferred Experience:
- Proficiency in PLC systems, including creating program code and documentation.
- Experience with Allen-Bradley PLC programming.
- HMI programming experience.
- Experience with Allen-Bradley variable frequency AC drives and reduced voltage starters.
- Experience specifying, installing, and troubleshooting sensors and transducers.
- Proficient in troubleshooting electrical/electronic circuits.
- Skilled in using electronic testing equipment.
- Proficient with Windows-based PCs and Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to relate to a wide range of constituents.
- Ability to work well in a team environment.
- Flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
- Willingness to travel to other facilities (25% - 50%).
