We are looking to fill the open position of Production Automation Engineer. This position will provide production automations engineering support for day-to-day operations of a Pet Treat manufacturing facility. The Production Automation Engineer will assist in plant engineering activities to better define, improve, and automate production processes.


The roll of the Production Automation Engineer is to provide production engineering support for day-to-day operations of a Pet Treat manufacturing facility. The Plant Production Engineer will assist in plant engineering activities to better define, improve, and automate production processes by performing the following duties:


  • Lead capital equipment installation projects by ensuring there is team collaboration and that the schedule/budget is advancing as planned.
  • Design/Spec equipment, process, procedures, layouts, and systems.
  • Solve/Correct manufacturing automation process breakdowns.
  • Defining/Documenting new and existing processes for improved product consistency.
  • Making improvements to current operations to increase OEE / throughput.
  • Complete production time studies, product quoting and other costing exercises to provide true manufacturing costs.
  • Investigate Production breakdowns & Process issues.
  • Review technical problems, processes, and procedures, then recommend solutions or changes for improvement.
  • Support repairing equipment and preventative maintenance scheduling.
  • Helping to reduce the 7 wastes (Transport, Waiting, Motion, Overproduction, Extra Processing, Inventory & Defects).
  • Review technical publications, articles, and abstracts to stay abreast of engineering and technical developments in industry.
  • Have a clear understanding of the PetIQ Mission and its business, products, and Quality goals/objectives.
  • Perform other duties as needed or assigned.

To perform the job successfully, an individual should possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:


  • Knowledge of computers and programs contained with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to add and subtract multiple digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's, 100's and 1000’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Able to participate in a team-oriented environment, willingness to assist and train others
  • Demonstrate safe behavior and support department/plant Safety goals in a continuous improvement process
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including overtime, weekends before and after schedule as needed
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write end of job reports and correspondence.
  • Must have excellent written, oral and computer communications skills to effectively communicate in person, through letters/emails/reports, and/or over the phone
  • Knowledge of PLC programming and troubleshooting is necessary
  • Strong electrical and mechanical knowledge, application and ability is necessary
  • Solidworks, AutoCAD, or similar 3D drawing and blueprint application and ability is preferred


Education and Training:

  • B.S of Engineering or Technology Management Degree or equivalent.
  • On the job experience automations experience preferred.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment covering hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical, PLC control, mechanical, boiler, high-speed equipment apps, and robotics automation preferred.
  • Experience with welding and fabrication preferred


Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to stand (10-12 hours); walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.


Environment:

  • Occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, odors fumes or airborne particles.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • The position is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts.
