The primary function of a Microbiologist is to assist with scheduling and oversight of activities, address problems, and distribute accurate results of work done in the Microbiology Department. This role maintains equipment and supplies, conducts microbiological procedures safely and efficiently, and trains and oversees daily activities of Microbiology Laboratory Technicians.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assist with scheduling and oversight of daily activities in the Microbiology Lab, and assist personnel with any activities and/or problems.
- Conduct microbiological isolation procedures for food-borne pathogens on processed products, feeds, and special projects.
- Coordinate serum collection, conduct ELISA serological procedures, and report results promptly.
- Schedule and oversee distribution of supplies for use in plants and hatcheries.
- Coordinate maintenance and purchase of inventories of Micro Lab supplies.
- Oversee and train Micro Lab technicians in safe and proper procedures.
- Assist other company laboratories with procedures, set-up, projects, and training as needed.
- Perform other related duties as directed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of laboratory microbiology equipment.
- Basic knowledge of food-borne pathogens screening and isolation procedures.
- Basic knowledge of integrated poultry production and processing is desirable.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment using excellent organizational skills and precise attention to detail.
- Must possess a strong customer-centric attitude, high energy level, and a strong sense of urgency.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing with other employees and vendors.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work in a dynamic and complex environment to meet deadlines and daily requirements.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and maintain a productive and committed work effort, meeting deadlines, and managing workload.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None. This is an individual contributor role with required competencies: Functional/Technical Skills, Action Oriented, Problem Solving, Learning on the Fly, and Interpersonal Savvy
Education:
- B.S. Degree in Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Experience:
- 2-3 years microbiology lab experience or equivalent.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to risk of injury in an office environment. Duties include a typical office setting, including extensive computer work, sitting or standing.
