Job Summary

The Sycamore School, a mastery-based learning school, is seeking a full-time Art Teacher to teach middle school and high school art classes. Each class has no more than 10 students. Responsibilities include creating and teaching developmentally appropriate art curricula that focuses on hands-on art skills; candidates should also be able to supervise lessons to ensure that learners interact in a supportive and respectful manner. The art teacher’s space is a makerspace, so classes can include mixed medium projects. This position is also responsible for planning and supervising weekly field trips that are an extension of the learning and support the mission of the school.

 

Responsibilities

  • Plan and prepare a program of study to meet the needs and interests of the students
  • Develop hands-on learning experiences with a reflection component
  • Establish and communicate clear learning objectives
  • Develop age-appropriate instructional strategies to achieve the art curriculum goals
  • Create differentiated lesson plans that are tailored to student needs and interests
  • Provide individualized instruction
  • Demonstrate and assist students to use different techniques and media to develop art works aligned to their artistic abilities
  • Inform students about cultural and historical influences on art
  • Provide instruction that encourages students to understand and appreciate art
  • Encourage students to express their own personalities and thoughts through the creative process
  • show students how to properly use and care for materials, tools, and equipment
  • monitor and maintain classroom inventory
  • plan and present art displays
  • Create and follow routines and procedures in conjunction with other staff to create consistency across classes
  • Build positive relationships with students and staff
  • Collaborate effectively with staff
  • Provide appropriate supports and accommodations for students who have poor executive functioning skills, anxiety, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and/or non-verbal learning disabilities
  • Manage classroom behavior to create a warm and safe classroom environment
  • Meet in cross-curricular teams for transdisciplinary curriculum development for core subjects
  • Monitor and communicate student progress to students, parent/guardians, and other teachers
  • Give timely and effective feedback to students to improve student products
  • Assess and evaluate student's performance on a regular basis
  • Prepare progress reports
  • Provide feedback to families about each student's progress

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Proficient in English – strong written and verbal skills
  • Tech savvy, including proficiency using Google Classroom, Google Docs and Google Sheets
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to give and take feedback in a constructive and professional manner

Education and other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Experience in classroom management
  • Previous teaching experience
