The Utilities Leadperson serves as a lead worker over a crew of employees involved in maintenance and repair tasks. The Leadperson is also responsible for the safe operation of assigned vehicles, including the operation of sewer-cleaning equipment.

Examples of Duties
  • Requires the safe operation of assigned vehicles, including the operation of sewer-cleaning equipment. 
  • Work involves performing semiskilled and skilled maintenance tasks on the repair, maintenance and installation of fire hydrants, water distribution mains, water service lines and storm, combined or sanitary sewer collection lines. 
  • Work also involves serving as lead worker over a small crew involved in the installation or repair of water services. 
  • Serves as a lead worker over a small crew involved in maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Repair and maintenance of broken or worn water mains, valves, and fire hydrants; and the repair and maintenance of storm, combined or sanitary sewer collection lines.
  • Maintenance duties usually extend to all tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair tasks and a knowledge of the water and sewer systems and their appurtenances.
  • Work requires the safe operation of assigned vehicles and can include, as required by the job assignment, the operation of sewer-cleaning equipment 
  • Serves as a lead worker over a small crew involved in maintenance and repair tasks. Work also requires the safe operation of assigned vehicles, including the operation of sewer-cleaning equipment. 
  • All other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Requires graduation from high school or equivalent and considerable experience in the maintenance and repair of water distribution systems.
  • Requires possession of a valid Ohio Class A CDL with tanker and air brake endorsements, a period of 180 days will be given to obtain the CDL, if necessary.
  • Requires possession of, or the ability to obtain, an Ohio EPA Class I Operator Certification in either Water Distribution System or Wastewater Collection System within three years of appointment.
  • Must obtain Ohio EPA Class I Certification in other area within five years of appointment date

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to effectively communication with supervisors and citizens. 
  • Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment and maintenance methods involved in the installation, repair and maintenance of fire hydrants, water distribution mains, water service lines, storm, combined or sanitary sewer collection lines and related systems
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and the safety precautions required. Knowledge of the operational and maintenance characteristics of the assigned service and maintenance vehicles and equipment. 
  • Some knowledge of modern supervisory principles and practices.
  •  Ability to provide guidance and supervise subordinates assigned to provide assistance and support in the performance of assigned tasks. 
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions and to maintain various records, including work performed, materials used, hours of labor and equipment used.
  • Ability to prepare written reports of work/maintenance performed. 
  • Ability to read and understand maps. 
  • Ability to climb safely into and out of excavations, work safely around operating equipment in tight quarters, work safely in and around traffic and work in and around sewer fumes as required by a job assignment. 
  • Ability to work in confined spaces such as valve and meter pits, vaults, manholes, catch basins, trenches, lift stations, sewers, wet wells, tunnels and digesters as some examples. 
  • Proven leadership skills, preferred
