Position Highlights

The School of Natural Resources and the Environment are in search of a Research Technician II who will assist with the implementation of a virtual fencing research project at the Santa Rita Experimental Range. This position will involve a combination of typical ranch management tasks to ensure implementation of the research design, including monitoring the location of livestock, ensuring gates are opened and closed according to schedule, checking and maintaining fences, and occasionally moving livestock in correspondence with a grazing schedule. The research technician will also assist with range monitoring, including production and utilization monitoring and other types of vegetation monitoring as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties:
  • Assist with range management, including monitoring the location of livestock, ensuring gates are opened and closed according to schedule, checking and maintaining fences, and occasionally moving livestock in correspondence with a grazing schedule.
  • Assist with rangeland monitoring, including production and utilization monitoring and other types of vegetation monitoring as needed.
  • Assist with data and project management tasks as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with different groups/individuals.
  • Ability to handle confidential and/or sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of working with livestock in both open range and corrals
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent learning attained through experience required.
  • 3 years minimum experience in range management, livestock management, or related field.
  • On-ranch experience: have worked on a livestock operation, including fixing fences and gates, checking and maintaining other infrastructure, and moving livestock according to a grazing schedule.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Data management experience: collecting and organizing data for analysis.
  • Experience working on horseback.
  • Experience safely handling and riding horses in the context of working with livestock.
  • Experience safely handling livestock in corrals and squeeze chutes.
Range monitoring experience: conducted production, utilization, and/or other range condition monitoring.FLSA
