Role
Under direct supervision, assists with procedural examinations and other morgue related activities.
Major Duties, Responsibilities
- Assists pathologist with clinical pathological procedures.
- Receives, prepares, stores and releases cadavers;
- Records physical information about cadavers such as height, weight, and temperature;
- Participates in autopsy procedures by making and closing incisions, eviscerating organs, fingerprinting, and collecting specimens at the direction of a pathologist;
- Collects, preserves, labels, and records tissue samples and bodily fluid specimens for toxicology, histology, and microbiology;
- Collects, labels, records and secures evidentiary materials, such as trace evidence, ammunition and other objects;
- Verifies and documents all human remains, property, and evidence received;
- Obtains and labels trace collections, specimens, and evidence for law enforcement agencies;
- Documents exam related information into department's case management system;
- Takes, develops and ensures appropriate quality of x-rays for examinations;
- Takes clinical, surgical and other photographs as directed by the pathologists;
- Maintains sanitary conditions of the facility, equipment and instruments, and ensures safe disposal of biological and biohazardous materials;
- Operates various equipment such as scales, autopsy saw, aspirator, x-ray machine, cameras, scalpels, and pallet jack/forklift.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Experience:
One year of experience in a medical setting assisting with surgeries or autopsies, pathological laboratory, funeral home, criminal justice, veterinarian work, emergency medicine, organ recovery or a closely related field.
Education:
High School Diploma or GED.
Must posses valid AZ driver's license.

Knowledge of:
- Human visceral anatomy, physiology, and pathology.
- Autopsy procedures.
- Special instruments and equipment used in a forensic laboratory including standard x-ray procedures.
- Procedures and techniques used to collect, process and store specimens.
- Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
- Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Working with medical instruments and laboratory equipment.
- Maintaining logs and records.
- Basic computer data entry.
- Prioritize work, meet deadlines.
- Protect confidential information and maintain discretion.
- Operate a motor vehicle.
Work is performed in a temperature-controlled environment. Work environment is subject to noxious odors. Occasional potential exposure to radiation hazards. The category may have a high risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens. Hepatitis B vaccine, tuberculosis screening, respiratory protection training and safety equipment will be provided. Clinical staff are required to use appropriate protective equipment.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to independently move and manipulate heavy objects. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time; must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull. Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effectively in person and telephonically. Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists. Capable of overhead lifting.
Ability to lift up to 100 pounds with assistance.
