Custodian (Overnight)

Under the direction of the Executive Housekeeper, the Custodian's overall responsibility is to maintain the cleanliness and visual presentation of the hotel's public areas including the Lobby and restrooms, maintain the cleanliness and safety of the back of the house areas and offices, to assist with guest luggage and the delivery and pick-up of guest room amenities.

We are currently looking for an Overnight Custodian for the 11:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m. shift. Willing to adjust the hours slightly (later start; earlier finish)._

Essential Functions
The custodian must be self-motivated and able to work independently. Although a daily task schedule will be provided, unforeseen issues may arise that require immediate attention. While working around the hotel, care and concern for our guests and a high level of professionalism are required.

Specific tasks include the following:

General Cleaning_

• Dust and polish furniture in common areas
• Sweep, mop, vacuum and shampoo carpets
• Wash windows and glass doors
• Move common area furniture following events
• Empty waste receptacles and dispose of trash
• Maintain restrooms in sanitary condition and replenish supplies
• Maintain cleanliness of employee break room
• Assist in checking facilities for safety hazards and report deficiencies

Guest Services_

• Handle luggage for guests, which could mean carrying up to 50lbs. Bags, lifting them on and off a luggage cart or luggage stand, hanging luggage in guest room closets, maneuvering luggage carts around the hotel and parking lot
• Deliver items to guest rooms including minifridges, rollaway cots, extra linens
• Greet guests in a hospitable manner

Grounds_

• Shovel snow, sand and salt sidewalks
• Sweep, blow leaves, pick up trash in the parking lot
• Water flower boxes, exterior plantings and interior plants

Housekeeping_

• Deliver towels, fans, extra amenities to guest rooms at the request of the Front Desk
• Perform or assist Room Attendants with guest room cleaning duties as necessary
• Assist laundry with washing, drying, folding, and running linen as necessary

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

• Ability to spend the majority of the day walking, twisting, bending, pushing and pulling, reaching, kneeling, and bending
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. for luggage, trash, and hotel supplies. Must be comfortable carrying trash bags up to 50 lbs. and be able to lift the trash bags into dumpster, which stands at approximately 4 feet, including opening the lid of the trash receptacle
• Grounds maintenance includes snow removal including the use of a shovel and snow blower in cold or inclement temperatures

Qualifications for Custodian

• Previous hotel or cleaning experience strongly preferred
• Working knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in custodial work
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or a minimum of one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English
• Reliable personal transportation. Free onsite parking provided. The hotel is located near the Salem commuter rail station and numerous MBTA bus lines.
• Available to work nights, weekends, and holidays

There are three typical custodial shifts: 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. | 3:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. | 11:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m.

Responsibilities differ during each shift so, if covering a shift, you may be asked to follow a different task list than you have during your normal shift.

The Hawthorne Hotel operates 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week. You may be required to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays.
