What is the job?

Reporting to the Can Plant Manager, the Chief Decorator will oversee the entire operation of the Backend, from the Necker/Palletizer to the Decorator. You will be the subject matter expert and mentor for the Backend Technicians. This facility uses waterless technology, and is considered to be a more comfortable environment because there is no use of IC sprays

What will you do?


• Serve as the SME (Subject Matter Expert) for the decorator, providing in-depth knowledge and expertise.


• Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.


• Provide training and development opportunities for team members.


• Mentor and guide the backend team.


• Operate the decorator, performing minor repairs, cleaning, and lubrication.


• Troubleshoot issues related to color, registration, and machine functions.


• Print sample aluminum beverage cans and color proofs.


• Adjust equipment and machinery to support product variations.


• Identify and troubleshoot production issues, implementing effective solutions.


• Understand and interpret color shades and hues to ensure accurate production output.


• Document and track production issues and resolutions, updating SOPs as needed.


• Help manage inks, varnishes, printing plates/blankets, and blank can inventory.


• Enforce quality control standards and procedures.


• Conduct regular quality inspections (with the Quality Control Technicians) to ensure products meet quality specifications.


• Identify and address any quality issues or defects.


• Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to enhance efficiency and productivity.


• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and lean manufacturing practices.


• Ensure all production activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.


• Enforce safety protocols to maintain a safe work environment.

What is required?


• Previous Experience as a Deco Operator/Adjuster/Maintainer/ or Chief in a Can Plant, REQUIRED (Please do not apply unless you have previous experience working on a Rutherford or Concord Decorator as this is a MUST in this highly specialized subject matter expert role that takes many years to master).


• Mechanically inclined; familiar with hand tools.


• Calm under pressure, always showing respect for coworkers.


• Ability to be patient and a desire to teach.


• Candidate must successfully pass American Canning's Color Hue test, and have color interpretive ability.


• Respect customer intellectual property with confidentiality.


• Familiar with PPE and OSHA Safety Standards.


• Ability to climb ladders and stairs throughout the shift, carry 50 lbs, and capable of working in confined spaces.


• Must already be authorized to work in the US.
