Position Description

Advertised Job Summary


The research specialist will work with the faculty principal investigator and grant staff to assist with NIH-funded research by conducting assessments on early development in high- risk groups of infants and toddlers with neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., Down syndrome) using multiple behavioral, language, developmental, and physiological measures.

This position also assists in managing data, preparing reports for families, preparing materials for assessments, and scheduling. Travel across the Southeast United States is required.

This position is ideal for someone planning to apply to PhD programs in Communication Sciences, Psychology, Human Development and Family Sciences, or related fields.

Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Human Development and Family Sciences, Communication Sciences, or a related field, or the ability to obtain degree prior to position start date.

Strong organization and communication skills, and attention to detail are necessary for success in this position. At least one year prior experience working in a research lab or with project management.

Preferred Qualifications


Prior experience working with families of children with neurodevelopmental conditions, or experience working with infants and toddlers with neurodevelopmental conditions.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities


This individual must be able to communicate effectively with faculty and graduate and undergraduate students, as well as communicate effectively and sensitively with families of children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

This individual must also be interested and effective in working with young children and their families.

Job Duties

Job Duty

The research specialist conducts assessments and collects data.

They administer developmental and behavioral assessments in a standardized manner to young children at risk for autism or anxiety and typical developing children.

A majority of the assessments are conducted within the state of South Carolina and across the United States in order to obtain diversity within the study.

The research specialist manages data, including scoring reports, entering data, calculating reliability, reporting summaries, and ensuring that data is entered in a consistent and timely manner.

The research specialist conducts pre- and post- assessment duties weekly, including preparing measures to be administered, mailing information to families, and processing completed data.

They score and summarize assessment data through feedback reports. These duties promote the accuracy and efficiency of the research.

The research specialist contributes, as needed, to professional presentations and articles. This includes summarizing data, conducting literature searches, creating posters, and presenting findings at academic conferences.
