Duties and Responsibilities
  • Preparing the Operating Room:
  • Ensure that the operating room is set up and ready for surgery.
  • Sterilize and arrange surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Assisting the Surgical Team:
  • Hand instruments and supplies to surgeons and other team members during procedures.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon to maintain a smooth flow during surgery.
  • Assist with patient positioning on the operating table.
  • Maintaining Sterile Field:
  • Follow strict aseptic techniques to maintain a sterile environment in the operating room.
  • Monitor and enforce infection control measures.
  • Instrumentation:
  • Select and pass instruments to surgeons according to the specific procedure being performed.
  • Keep track of instruments and ensure they are returned for proper sterilization after use.
  • Handling Specimens:
  • Assist in the collection, preparation, and labeling of specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Ensure proper handling and transport of specimens.
  • Equipment Management:
  • Set up and test surgical equipment to ensure it is functioning properly.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues during surgery.
  • Patient Care:
  • Assist with patient preparation before surgery, including positioning and draping.
  • Provide emotional support to patients as needed.
  • Communication:
  • Communicate effectively with other members of the surgical team.
  • Relay information between the surgical team and other hospital staff.
  • Postoperative Duties:
  • Assist with the cleaning and restocking of the operating room after surgery.
  • Transfer patients to the recovery room and provide necessary information to the recovery room staff.
  • Adherence to Policies and Procedures:
  • Follow hospital policies, procedures, and protocols related to surgical technology.
  • Stay updated on advancements in surgical technology and techniques.
  • Emergency Response:
  • Be prepared to respond to emergencies in the operating room and assist as needed.
  • Documentation:
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of surgical procedures, including counts of instruments and supplies.

RequirementsEducation
  • Completion of an accredited program recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or formal structure surgical program, (e.g., military services)

Licenses and Certifications
  • BLS - Basic Life Support
  • CST - Certified Surgical Tech
Experience

Two (2) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience
