Department Summary

UCLA Film & Television Archive, a department of the UCLA Library, collects moving images as works of art and as social and historical documents, restores and preserves moving images for current and future generations, curates collections, programs, and events using moving images to advance knowledge, and provides access to moving images for purposes of research, education, and enjoyment. The Archive's collections consist of over 500,000 holdings dating from the dawn of cinema to the present and cover a broad spectrum of content from major Hollywood studios films and network television shows to independent productions and news footage.The Public Programs unit of the Film & Television Archive conceptualizes live and virtual cinema programs for both in-theater exhibition and virtual screening platforms in a year-round capacity. Public Programs coordinates an ongoing calendar of screening events of contemporary, historical, and archival films curated from various sources, including the Archive's various collections as well as local & international studio & independent film archives and contemporary international distributors. Public Programs is responsible for programs from ideation through research to execution and works closely with the Motion Picture and Television Offices, Research and Study Center, and Library Communications and Marketing to fulfill the Archive's mission to advocate for the accessibility of all moving images in all formats.
Position Summary

Under the direction of the Sr. Public Programmer, the Senior Projectionist operates and manages the Billy Wilder Theater projection booth and contingent areas: baffle room, AV control/compressor room, lobby/monitor area, which provide screening presentations for the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Hammer Museum. Standard duties include weekly projection equipment operation, management of maintenance, creation of DCPs, testing files, scheduling on-call projectionists, training, additional help, and safety guidelines. The Senior Projectionist works closely with Public Programmers to coordinate quarterly online screenings for the Film & Television Archive's Virtual Screening Room, which provides live and pre-recorded film screening events through its online platforms as part of the Archive's public programs. The Senior Projectionist plans and schedules use of projection equipment and theater facilities in coordination with Hammer Museum, and regularly maintains and ensures mechanical operation of complex 16mm/35mm/70mm equipment. The Senior Projectionist Incumbents oversees and ensures that projection booth-theater practices and procedures adhere to safety rules and regulations as established by the Fire Marshall; assesses complex jobs to determine skills, equipment, and facilities needed; estimates costs; approves expenditures and purchase requests, and coordinates with Hammer AV team to identify upgrade needs and costs. The Senior Projectionist may oversee the research, design, construction, and installation of new equipment and participate in the development of equipment/facility utilization plans and the justification of new acquisitions. The Senior Projectionist performs journey-level duties in the operation and maintenance of equipment/facility as required.

Qualifications

5 Years At least five years of full-time experience projecting 35mm with Kinoton projectors or relevant experience. (Required) And Experience with identifying mechanical relationships & optics related to projection equipment using specific electronic testing equipment, utilizing technical & electronic diagrams to perform repairs. (Required) And Demonstrated experience in the management of staff and providing clear directions to employees. (Required) And Experience with projecting 16mm film. (Required) And Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, testing, and repairing projection equipment. (Required) And Experience with working as part of a team; collaborating with colleagues. Ability to establish rapport and maintain cooperative working relationships. (Required) And Experience with organizing material, information, people in a systematic way to optimize efficiency and minimize duplication of effort. (Required) And Experience with DCP creation, file testing, and digital projection. (Required) And Experience training projectionists in projection and safety requirements. (Required) And Experience with current standards for virtual film events, including technical specs & standards for software/tech & event participation by intra/interdepartmental parties & third parties/guests. (Preferred) And Experience with projecting 70mm film. (Preferred) And Experience with the fields of film and television production and archival preservation. (Preferred) And Experience with film traffic procedures. (Preferred) Skill in setting priorities and follow directions which accurately reflect relative importance of job responsibilities. (Required)Skill in operating and maintaining sophisticated professional motion picture digital cinema and video projection equipment. (Required)Skill in perceiving cause and effect relationships in mechanical and electrical operations. (Required)Detailed knowledge of prof. projection practices relative to problems, situations, practices or procedures in order to:define problems or objectives;identify relevant concerns/factors;formulate logical & objective conclusions; recognize alternatives & their implications; analyze complex tech data. (Required)Ability to speak on 1-to-1 basis using appropriate vocabulary & grammar to obtain info, explain policies & procedures, persuade others to understand specific opinion/action. Skill writing concise, logical, grammatically correct analytical reports to explain the workings & needs of booth & theater. (Required)Skill to prioritize assignments to finish work in a timely manner according to: changes in workload; changes in assignments; frequent interruptions or distractions; competing requirements. Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal or no direction. (Required)Ability to accept equivocal circumstances and take action where answers to a projection problem are not readily apparent. Skill in recognizing an emergency and taking appropriate action. (Required)Skill in using hand and power tools to repair and build projection equipment. (Required)Detailed knowledge of safety rules and regulations related to the professional projection of films and tapes and specifically potentially hazardous nitrate film. (Required)Working knowledge in engineering principals. Recognition of symbols, nomenclature, and methods. Knowledge of metric system units and U.S. equivalents, as well as international moving image media formats as they relate to internationally sourced materials and equipment. (Required)Working knowledge of electronics and electricity as it relates to projection equipment. (Required)Ability to get to work reliably and on time and to be present in the workplace during normal working hours. (Required)
