The Community
Lompoc is located 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles in Santa Barbara County. Its population is approximately 40,000 and the area is known for its mild, smog-free climate. The average maximum temperature is 73 degrees and the average winter high temperature is 63 degrees. Lompoc is the support city for Vandenberg Space Force Base, the aerospace center of the West Coast.

Lompoc is also known as the flower seed capital of the world, as it produces more than half of the world's supply of flower seeds.

Community Participation

It is the policy of the Board of Education to encourage input in the development of policies and programs for the school district.

Various organizations and parent representatives have been actively involved with planning education programs.

All public entities have embarked on a mission of collaboration to educate its citizens, as evidenced by SARB, CODE, and the daytime loitering ordinance.


Job Description / Essential Elements:

Basic Function:


Under the immediate direction of the site administrator or designee, provides an educational program for students in grades TK-6, or a combination thereof; plans and supervises the work of assigned paraprofessionals; assists in other school programs as assigned.


Essential Duties:


Provides instruction and educational experiences to students in reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, health, art, physical education, and music utilizing the course of study adopted by the Governing Board and other appropriate materials.


Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and Administrative Regulations and procedures of the school district.


Actively supports the District English Language Development (ELD) and special education programs and participates in and instructs in the programs as assigned.


Actively supports the district integration/mainstreaming program and encourages the participation of students who qualify for the program; participates in and isntructs the integration/mainstreaming program as assigned.


Provides planned learning experiences to motivate students and utilizes the available time for instruction in an effective and efficient manner.


Develops lesson plans and instructional materials providing individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student in accordance with their mental, physical and emotional maturity.


Establishes and maintains standards of student behavor needed to achieve a funtional learning atmosphere in the classroom; supports and assists in maintaining the District's discipline policy and site discipline plan.

Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, prepares progress reports.

Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss individual student's progress and to interpret the school program.


Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitutde and learning programs.

Creates a functional and attractive environment for learning through displays, bulletin boards and interest centers.

Maintains professional competence through in-service educational activities provided by the District and/or self-selected professional growth opportunities.


Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which performance is evaluated in conformance with District guidelines.

Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies and maintains required inventory records.

Insures a confortable room environment through control of heating, lighting, and ventilation to the extent possible.

Establishes, maintains and supports standards of personal conduct and discipline in accordance with the current District discipline policy.

Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.

Administers group standardized tests in accordance with the District's testing program.

Participates in staff commitees and in the sponsorship of student activities.

Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs as required.


Performs other duties as assigned, including special assignments during crises or emergency situations as determined by the Superintendent or designee.


Demonstrated Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

Principles, theories, methods, techniques and strategies pertaining to teaching and instruction of grade TK-6 students.

Child growth and development and behavior characteristics of students in grades TK-6.

Educational curriculum and instructional goals and objectives and the educational trends and research findings pertaining to student educational programming.

Behavior management and behavior shaping strategies, techniques and methods, and conflict resolution procedures.

Socio-economic and cultural background differences of the school population.

Technology, including computers and computer programs.

Ability to:


Plan, organize, develop and consistently deliver a comprehensive teaching and instruction program for students in grades TK-6, or a combination of these grades.


Provide effective learning experiences for students with a wide range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and with varying mental, social and emotional levels.

Effectively assess the educational needs of students and design, develop and implement sound individualized educational plans.

Provide an attractive, inviting and stimulating learning environment.


Perform research and development activities pertaining to related elementary curriculum and instruction programs, pilot projects and innovative programs designed to enhance educational opportunities and experiences.

Communicate effectively in oral and written form using grammatically correct language.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions with minimal accountability controls.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.

Utilize technology and operate computers and computer programs.

Perform the essential functions of the job.

Experience and Education:


Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying.

A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:

Experience:

Successful completion of student teaching at a recognized college or university; partiicipation in a recognized teacher intern program or successful classroom teaching experience, prefereable in an elementary grade setting.


Education:

Possession of a Baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university with emphasis in elementary education, instructional technology, a subject matter field commonly taught in the elementary grades or closely related field areas.


Other requirements:

Certification:

Possession of a valid California credential including CLAD or BCLAD certification authorizing service as a teacher in grade level(s) and/or subject areas assigned.


Condition of Employment:
Insurability by the District's liability carrier.

Personal Qualities:
Appearance, grooming and personality which establish a desiraable expample for students. Ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health.

Better than average recommendations from student teaching supervisors or other professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment and classroom performance fo the teacher.

Skill in written and oral expression which provides a desirable model for students.

Lifting or moving objects, normally not exceeding thirty (30) pounds.
