The Lead Laboratory Assistant supports lab operations by processing and handling patient specimens for diagnostic testing accurately and promptly, following established protocols. This role is responsible for receiving, centrifuging, storing, and transporting samples according to protocol to uphold sample integrity, as well as providing customer service to patients, physicians, and nursing personnel in giving instruction and assistance for laboratory testing results. Additionally, the Lead Lab Assistant may perform basic laboratory techniques, phlebotomy, and collect blood specimens as needed. They are also involved in training/retraining, assisting with administrative tasks, and supervising and coordinating other lab assistants when required.

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and staff in line with Jefferson's values.
  • Collaborates with laboratory divisions and nursing personnel to ensure proper collection of specimens for testing.
  • Follows department policy for patient identification and blood sample labeling.
  • Maintains a timely flow of specimens to expedite sample analysis.
  • Reviews lab requisitions for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepares specimens for analysis, transports, and stores for future use.
  • Assists with patient registrations as per hospital policy.
  • Coordinates loading of patient samples on automation lines when necessary.
  • Assumes a team leadership role including training and supervisory tasks.
  • Performs other lab duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Experience: 1-2 years of previous Laboratory Experience preferred. Prior laboratory assistance and/or phlebotomy training required at certain locations. Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Conditions of Employment

Covid Vaccination is a requirement for employment at Jefferson for employees working at clinical entities or at the University. If not vaccinated, vaccination will be required prior to hire date unless an approved medical or religious exemption is obtained.
