The City of Virginia Beach Public Works is hiring an Electrician to perform a variety of electrical maintenance and construction tasks.

This is a safety sensitive position; you must successfully complete a pre-employment physical and pass a mandatory drug test.

This position will be filled as an Electrician I or an Electrician II depending on qualifications.

Candidates will be evaluated based on past work history/job experience and interview performance*Duties include but are not limited to:* Will assist in performing troubleshooting, repairs, alterations, and installations to the electrical streetlighting facilities/infrastructure throughout the City of Virginia Beach (CVB) in accordance with all applicable codes and regulations.


  • Routinely read/review electrical schematics, control panel schedules and electrical drawings
  • Be knowledgeful of and able to read and understand NEC and OSHA standards to ensure a safe working environment and quality workmanship with regards to electrical construction and maintenance
  • Inspect active roadway and/or other CVB projects that involve new lighting installations or upgrades to existing facilities.\Complete work orders, document technical data, and daily project/work logs
  • Will utilize computers to interface with radios and automated lighting control systems for themed lighting locations.
  • Collect light lumen readings during night operations when needed
  • Interact with private electrical contractors working on CVB projects
  • Work on electrical systems to include, but not limited to, lighting control centers, contactor switches, surge arrestors, thermostats, humidistats, photocells, meters, wiring, lighting fixtures, etc.
  • Operation of various vehicles including long boom bucket trucks, utility vehicles, vehicles equipped with TMA devices, etc.
  • Maintain personal protective equipment.
  • Work in all types of weather conditions and emergency situations. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operation status.
  • Required nights, weekends, and holidays on standby rotation schedule associated with the lighting maintenance program as well as the VA811 Miss Utility ticket response program.
  • Performs other job duties as determined by the supervisor based on workload and department needs.
Decisions to hire at a I or II level will be based on qualifications and level of related experience.

Specific qualifications for each position level are as follows:

Electrician I - Minimum starting salary: $37,269.11/annually, $17.91/hourly

  • High school or GED plus two (2) years' experience in fields such as electrical construction/maintenance and methods that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver's license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver's license eligibility requirements
  • Able to use hand tools
  • Knowledge of vehicle start-up procedures and their operations
  • Familiar with and able to work in elevated locations out of a bucket truck
  • Able to interpret, read and understand maps
  • Assist and/or troubleshoot and repair electrical control centers, and LED lighting systems; and install wire, conduit systems, poles, fixtures, etc.
  • Knowledge of automated switches, photocell devices, and programable lighting systems
  • Completion of work orders and documentation utilizing an iPad/tablet and/or computer in a professional, timely fashion
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with senior employees and supervisors about any issues that arise
  • Other tasks/duties as assigned
Electrician II - Minimum starting salary: $45,300.90/annually, $22.07/hourly

(Decisions to hire at this level are not guaranteed and will be made based on level of demonstrated knowledge, qualifications, and level of related experience}

In addition to the Electrician I duties listed above, Electrician II's will perform the following:

  • Minimum of four (4) years' experience in fields, such as residential/commercial electrical repair or construction maintenance, that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems and equipment for municipal utilities or facilities
  • Knowledge of programing lighting schemes, radios, and lighting control centers
  • Participate in work involving preventive maintenance, distribution panels and equipment, circuit systems, controls, and light fixtures. Able to Interpret, understand and use electrical blueprints and schematics
  • Able to supervise and train Electrician I's
  • Able to work independently in managing multiple projects and prioritizing them as needed with regards to tasks, manpower, budgets, etc.
This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies
