The State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz seeks applications for the position of Director of Student Health Service (SHS).

This is an exciting opportunity for an accomplished, dynamic, and team-oriented currently licensed Physician, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant with excellent clinical leadership skills.

The Director will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive primary care services and education to a culturally diverse population of more than 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

Located in New Paltz, New York, a vibrant region in the Hudson Valley of NY.

The Director provides clinical leadership, supervision of professional health care providers, medical administration, budget planning, and direct patient care within the scope of their license.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong record of medical/clinical supervision with a deep commitment to, and understanding of, young adult contemporary healthcare issues, and proven experience and skills to work effectively with a globally diverse student population.

Candidates must have outstanding clinical judgment, strong communication skills, compassion, and administrative acumen with the ability to develop a broad institutional perspective and work collaboratively with counseling and other campus partners.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Provides oversight of the clinical areas and operations including primary care providers a Limited-Service Laboratory, hiring, and ongoing training/professional development.
  • Participates in on-going peer review for other SHS physicians and summarizes peer review results; makes recommendations related to peer review.
  • Functions as "laboratory director" is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the laboratory.
  • Serves as medical consultant for health issues and inquiries from New Paltz administration, media, parents, etc.
  • Reviews all medical policies/procedures annually, seeking clinical staff input, evaluating infection control procedures, and physician-credentialing policies/procedures.
  • Ensuring finalized roll-out and utilization of Electronic Health Records system Medicat
  • Monitors national/global/college health issues and concerns to ensure that SHS and New Paltz are both aware and responsive to these issues.
  • Participates as active member of various committees, and serves as a representative of SHS in University-wide activities when requested.
  • Performs other duties such as clinical in-services, health education programs, and orientation programs for students/parents.
Clinical Responsibilities


Provides primary outpatient medical care within the scope of their license for patients seen at the SHS, including taking health histories, performing physical examinations, ordering diagnostic tests as needed, making accurate diagnoses, treating with medication, and other appropriate therapeutic modalities.


  • Within the scope of their license performs minor surgical procedures such as minor suturing, incision and drainage of abscesses, removal of skin lesions, etc.
  • Documents health care in the electronic health record.
  • Refers patients as needed to specialists in the community or local emergency rooms/hospitals.
  • Provides consultation to clinical providers: physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, and provides guidance on complex cases.
  • Is available as needed in the event of an urgent medical or communicable disease on campus (e.g., meningitis or tuberculosis outbreak) needing rapid medical response or mass immunizations.
  • May be assigned as essential personnel to respond to university weather closings or for health-related emergencies.
  • Provides pre-participation consultations for student athletes for chronic medical problems.
  • Provides oversight of Tuberculosis screening and protocols.
Qualifications

Required:

  • MD, DO, PA, DNP or NP from an accredited medical school/nursing program.
  • Currently licensed to practice, and for physicians, successful completion of residency program and current board certification.
  • Licensed to practice or eligible for licensure as an MD, DO, PA or NP in the state of New York.
  • Satisfactory Review by the National Practitioner Databank.
  • Minimum of 5 to 7 years of relevant clinical experience in an outpatient setting.
  • Understanding of contemporary healthcare issues for university students and the skills to work effectively with a college-age population.
  • Strong interpersonal skills as well as excellent verbal/written skills.
  • Evidence of professional leadership role in a healthcare setting or the equivalent in leadership skills.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population; demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and ability to develop and maintain inclusive environments.

Preferred:

  • Experience as a medical director, physician, or nurse practitioner in a college health setting
  • Experience with sports medicine and women's health
  • Current Basic Life Support CPR certification
