The University of Miami is currently seeking an Assistant Professor of Clinical Audiology, Cochlear/Hearing Implants to work in Miami.The Assistant Professor of Clinical Audiology administers and interprets a variety of tests, such as air and bone conduction, and speech reception and discrimination tests, to determine the type and degree of hearing impairment, as well as contributes positively to the visibility, academic and research standing of the department; The Assistant Professor is expected to actively engage in research, teaching and furthering the field.
The primary specialty of this position is Cochlear/Hearing Implants. For this role, the audiologist must be prepared and comfortable in running a clinic independently. Travel to satellite clinics may be required. Bilingual is preferred. Occasional flexibility to cover for different audiology clinics in the absence of a co-worker is required.Core Job Functions and Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts cochlear implant candidacy evaluations, activations, and follow-up mappings according to clinical protocol for patients of all ages for all three FDA approved cochlear implant manufacturers.
- Completes hearing aid programming for bimodal users.
- Completes full diagnostic hearing assessments using appropriate test methods and equipment for patients of all ages.
- Formulates and implements treatment plans to address patient needs.
- Completes documentation in a concise and timely manner.
- Counsels patients, families, and healthcare teams appropriately.
- Participates in ongoing clinical research as projects arise.
- Collaborates with members of a multi-disciplinary hearing implant team including. psychology, education, speech pathology, neurotology, social work, administrative staff.
- Collaborates with colleagues to foster ongoing improvement within the cochlear implant program as well as efforts to expand reach more patients with cochlear implant technology.
- Maintains continuing education regarding best practices and advancements in cochlear implant technology.
- Provides coverage for the Otology clinic for at least 20% full-time effort (changes to this amount are at the discretion of the department chair and chief of service), and coverage of the Cochlear/Hearing Implants service line in one or more area clinic locations.
- Performs immittance and emissions testing.
- Conducts auditory evoked potential assessments for patients.
- Assesses hearing sensitivity and quality and provides patients with information regarding the results.
- Dispenses assistive or rehabilitative devices based on patient's physiology and needs.
- Consults with physicians and other professionals about patient's future needs and current progress.
- Maintains client records at all stages including initial evaluation and discharge.
- Documents all professional and clinical reports and conducts research on auditory topics.
- Utilizes local, state, and national regulations to make decisions regarding service eligibility.
- Participates in conferences, forums, and training sessions to remain up-to-date with or share knowledge of new hearing or speech disorder treatment methods.
- Actively participates in the education of externs, fellows, students and onboarding audiologists, engaging in clinical teaching of graduate students.
- Maintains high clinical quality, productivity and citizenship within the department, e.g., attendance and participation in lectures, rounds, committee assignments, academic activity, etc.
- Develops a regional and eventually national presence as a clinical leader through participation in national and regional meetings.
- Develops, maintains and, as appropriate, secures funding for academic/research activities, such as translational research, clinical trials and other clinical research.
- Performs administrative and committee responsibilities as assigned from time to time by the Chairman or Service Director, which may include participation in, or organization of, continuing medical education courses in provider area of specialty.
- Participate in divisional quality control projects and implementations.
- Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Education Requirements (Essential Requirements):
- Doctorate of Audiology degree required.
- Current valid Florida Audiologist license required.
Work Experience Requirements (Essential Requirements):
- One year of audiologist-related experience is preferred.
- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
- Knowledge of and ability to apply auditory principles, procedures, and techniques.
- Knowledge of auditory agents used in patient treatments.
- Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat hearing or speech disorders.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
