Pierce County's Maintenance and Operations (M&O) team is looking for Civil Engineers to work with the maintenance of roads, stormwater systems, airports, creeks, and river levees.

Your focus as a lead engineer (CE2) will be on multiple short, medium, and long-range maintenance projects crossing over to many other Planning and Public Works (PPW) divisions.

You will have a say in project designs involving teams from Surface Water Management, County Road Projects, and Capital Improvement Projects to ensure processes and projects are maintainable.

You will be heavily involved in emergency response to landslides, flooding, erosion, and other emergencies that may interfere with effective infrastructure.

With about 25% of your time in the field, this is a great opportunity to see your projects through to completion across a vast area of Civil Engineering.

How to be Successful in the Role:

In this role, both you and the teams you guide will be made successful through your technical contributions and experience to the overall project planning, design, and analysis to ensure timely completions.

Your ability to guide and participate in team efficiency and help develop project delivery will build your success. Your efforts will be of great value during the preparation of engineering design plans, technical specifications, estimates, and reports. Excellent communication both written and verbal will help build strong team dynamics.

Core Daily Responsibilities:


Develops, administers, designs, and inspects maintenance projects, which may include structures, culverts, retaining walls, traffic control devices, sanitary or storm sewer structures, water quality enhancement facilities, or other appurtenances.

Studies, analyzes, and prepares engineering-related reports as required by state, federal and local authorities. Presents findings orally or in writing to county staff, officials, or other agencies.

Reviews and recommends changes to consulting engineer prepared plans to meet County standards for roads, storm-water quantity and quality and erosion control.

Prepares and submits recommended mitigation to the Pierce County Environmental Official in the areas of traffic, slope stability and storm-water runoff.

Prepares and reviews comprehensive engineering plans and cost estimates.

Minimum Qualifications:
Three years of progressively responsible experience related to the position.
Four-year degree in a closely related field

Substituting for the degree, be registered as an EIT or an additional 4 years of directly related work which demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions.

Compensation for this position is from

$45.35 to $57.42 per hour.
