SUMMARY:


Assistant Publications Technical Support Specialists (TSS) LaTeX Specialist process electronic manuscripts submitted to the AMS in a variety of formats.

Their main function is to receive book and journal submissions from authors, prepare the text and graphic files for transfer to the appropriate journal or book production stream, and to perform technical work on these files throughout the production process.

In addition to performing the daily production tasks of the group, the Technical Support Specialist may be called upon to forward information to other AMS staff.

The position requires a highly detail-oriented individual who possesses strong technical skills and the ability to analyze problems and work with other staff in seeking solutions.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Technical:

  • High level knowledge of LaTeX or other desktop publishing programs; ability to code initial files and to make corrections in electronic files or use more advanced tools to achieve desired output and format of files; text and mathematics.
  • Typeset manuscripts in LaTeX or other desktop publishing program to create copy in desired format.
  • Make corrections to InDesign documents for Notices.
  • Data entry into the publications database.
  • Provide advanced technical information and support to authors and editors as required by the project.
  • Understanding of the general processes that run production of electronic files.
  • Perform administrative and technical duties associated with processing of electronic files for books and journals, especially Notices, from submission through corrections, using templates provided.
  • Coordinate with Creative Services to prepare graphics files for Notices.
  • Prepare final master file and metadata for posting monthly Notices issue.

Administrative:

  • Work to complete assigned tasks on schedule and within budget; and notify appropriate staff responsible for the project of foreseeable delays and/or budget overruns. Work with other staff and supervisors to resolve problems behind such delays or budget overruns.
  • Maintain accuracy and completeness of the publications database for work completed.
  • Communicate with Production Editors and other staff regarding assigned projects.
  • Communicate with authors and editors as necessary.
  • Perform quality control checks throughout the production process and communicate this information to the Production Editor of the project.
  • Contribute information toward status reports and perform other administrative tasks as required.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems.
  • Write and maintain documentation.
  • Perform other administrative duties as needed.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  • List the primary internal and external contacts and the context of those contacts
  • Works within the Information Systems Publications Technical Editing Group (TEG)
  • Works with other members of TEG and the Publications Technical Group
  • Occasionally works with Productions Editors and other members of the Publications Department
