Position Summary:

The Deaf Educator organizes student learning activities throughout the school day, focusing on enhancing listening and spoken language skills in academic, social, and developmental areas with support from the CAOS supervisor, academic program coordinator, and ECHO Program Manager.



Qualifications:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelors Deaf Education

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
- Professional Educator License (PEL) with Teacher of Students who are D/HoH (PK-Age 21) endorsement Illinois or Educator License with Stipulations (ELS) with Teacher of Students who are D/HoH (PK-Age 21) endorsement Illinois or Equivalent license from another state. Candidate must obtain PEL or ELS within the first year and Basic Life Support (BLS).

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Understanding of developmentally appropriate practices for children from birth through age six. Awareness of developmental milestones in speech, language, audition, gross and fine motor skills, self-help skills, and play/socialization.



Essential Functions:

  • - Plans academic curricula based on Illinois Learning Standards and Illinois Early Learning Standards, and CAOS curriculum.
  • - Establishes and manages classroom routines and behavior management programs for individual students with support from senior deaf educators and CAOS supervisor.
  • - Collaborates with parents on their child's development and provides strategies for home support, in coordination with the speech therapist.
  • - Plans, adjusts, and records daily activities tailored to each child's cognitive, communication, academic, and social skill levels with guidance from senior deaf educators and CAOS supervisor. Ensures learning activities allow each child to explore relevant aspects of their world at their current functioning stage.
  • - Selects language and vocabulary goals for each child with guidance from senior deaf educators, focusing on auditory learning throughout the day. Plans activities for consistent practice with speech, language, and vocabulary targets with assistance from senior deaf educators and speech therapist.
  • - Manages sensory devices such as cochlear implants, hearing aids, BAHA, and FM systems to optimize functionality.
  • - Engages in school-wide and grade-level activities and committees.
