About the Role

Whisper Aero is currently in need of a talented and driven power electronics engineer to spearhead the design, prototyping, and validation of efficient and high-power-density power electronics and motor controllers.

The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with Whisper Aero's Powertrain Lead and Thermal Management Lead to establish motor controller requirements and determine the most suitable controller topology. Responsibilities include conducting design optimization, procuring PCBs and components for prototyping, and verifying design performance through hardware testing. As a vital part of a streamlined engineering team, there may be opportunities for the candidate to support other functional teams, such as the ground test team and the flight test team.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the development of motor drives for electric propulsion systems at Whisper Aero
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies within the power electronics and motor drives realm
  • Conduct in-depth evaluations of motor controller topologies and select the most suitable topology based on specific electric propulsion requirements and constraints
  • Design and enhance motor controllers for electric propulsion systems using modeling and simulation
  • Guide design review processes and evaluate cost, risk, and schedule for prototype construction
  • Prototype and validate hardware to meet design specifications
  • Compare commercial off-the-shelf motor controllers for diverse applications

Basic Qualifications

  • U.S. Person
  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering or its equivalent
  • Sound knowledge of AC electric motor control and different PWM schemes
  • Familiarity with sensorless and sensored motor control algorithms
  • Proficiency in PCB layout software (EAGLE, OrCAD, Altium, etc.) and its implementation
  • Expertise in SPICE
  • Experience in programming languages such as Embedded C, C++, Java, Python, and/or MATLAB/Simulink
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for knowledge sharing

Bonus Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or its equivalent
  • Experience with wide-bandgap semiconductors
  • Knowledge of thermal modeling and power electronics design
  • Familiarity with DSP, FPGA, and microcontrollers
  • Competence with the CAN protocol
  • Proficiency in software/hardware development compliant with DO-278C and/or DO-254
  • Hold a Private Pilot or Remote Pilot Certificate
