Knowesis is currently seeking an experienced Organic Chromatographer/Chemist to support the Defense Centers for Public Health-Aberdeen, Laboratory Analytical Division Organic, Pesticides section. The Organic Chromatographer/Chemist conducts complex chemical analyses of environmental and occupational health samples, determining the chemical composition and toxic constituents. Performs chemical analyses, including sample preparations, according to Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs) and resolves conflicts as needed. Evaluate and report results as required, including the input and processing of data in a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Checks quality control data and initiates corrective actions as needed. Identifies components found, concentrations, and techniques used. Leads special studies as needed.

To be eligible for this position, candidates must have the ability to obtain a PUBLIC TRUST clearance and possess U.S. Citizenship without the need for sponsorship, both now and in the future. Applicants without proof of U.S. Citizenship will not be considered due to the position's security clearance requirements.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Develops, plans, and performs chemical analyses in accordance with plans developed and with minimal oversight. Recognize anomalies or discrepancies in data obtained, conduct additional experiments, resolve conflicts, and document results as required. Performs complex chemical tasks and special studies as needed.
  • Develops, adapts, modifies, and implements analytical testing methods as needed. Determines approach and analytical instruments for required data. Improves laboratory processes, increases quality, and reduces waste and costs. Evaluate compliance with sample storage and preservation requirements. Troubleshoots and maintains laboratory instruments, performing minor repairs as required. Recommends new analytical equipment as needed, trains on equipment operations and analyses as required.
  • After initial training, works independently to plan and carry out assignments, independently resolving most conflicts while coordinating their work with others. Makes recommendations for actions to improve operations. Completed work is reviewed only for the achievement of objectives, and the result is generally error-free.
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Four or more years' experience operating analytical chemistry equipment.
  • Four or more years' experience in a production laboratory setting doing sample preparation and analysis of industrial hygiene and/or environmental samples.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Preferred experience with one or more of the following methods: EPA 331/6850 Perchlorate in Water/Soil, EPA Carbamates), EPA 537 (Glyphosate), EPA Anions), EPA Total Organic Carbon), EPA Ammonia in Water), EPA Phosphorus in Water), EPA 353.2 or similar method (Nitrate/Nitrite in Water), OSHA-ID 215 or similar method (Hexavalent Chromium in Air/Wipes).
  • Preferred experience working in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related degree is required.
